Topics in Medical Informatics - Columbia University

Topics in Medical Informatics

G6080

Fall 2001

Introduction

Topics in Medical Informatics is back after a short hiatus with a new time and format. The course combines a journal club with a social agenda of having fun. The intent is to bring together the diverse members of the department, including Applied Masters, Research Masters, and Doctoral students, faculty, and beyond. Food and beverages will be provided.

Course Format

The course consists of weekly discussions. In September we will discuss articles from the JAMA series on how to interpret the medical literature. The remainder of the semester, with a two week exception, will be devoted to a discussion of classical articles as listed in the 1999 Yearbook of Medical Informatics. The exception is the two classes after AMIA where we will review selected topics from the conference.

Two students will be assigned each week. One student will be responsible for presenting

the article for discussion. The other student will review the literature around the topic as

well as any relevant papers published subsequently. This second student will need to

provide the TA with the literature list so that it can be placed on the website several days

prior to the discussion date. The paper to be discussed will be available in PDF format on

the Topics web page. Students will need a password to access these files.
