HEROES!

Dear Friends,

Welcome to the York Symphony Orchestra's 2018-19 Season: HEROES! Each of the six concerts on our Classical Series will introduce music inspired by heroes of one form or another. We begin with Beethoven's monumental Symphony No. 3, The Eroica (Heroic Symphony). Next, we present Musical Heroes, including a 100th birthday celebration for Leonard Bernstein--the greatest hero of American Music. In February, we honor two composers considered National Heroes in their homelands: Dmitri Shostakovich and Jean Sibelius. Knights in Shining Armor will feature the epic Symphony No. 4 by Anton Bruckner and Beethoven's Leonore Overture No. 3. With Heroes from Olden Times, we showcase our wonderful York Symphony Chorus performing the "Lord Nelson" Mass by Haydn. Finally, no season of heroes would be complete without the most heroic piece of all: Ein Heldenleben (A Hero's Life) by Richard Strauss.

Our four-concert Pops Series will be no less heroic. We open with Heroes & Superheroes, highlighting the music of Superman, Batman, Spiderman, Wonder Woman, and more. Our annual Holiday Pops Spectacular will also have Greater York Dance performing selections from The Nutcracker. In February, we pay tribute to a recently fallen hero of popular music David Bowie. We conclude with Sports Orchestrated; From Rocky & Chariots of Fire to the Olympic Games...the greatest sports music ever!

We are very excited and look forward to having you join us for our celebration of HEROES!

Sincerely,

Lawrence Golan The Jody & Louis Appell, Jr. Music Director York Symphony Orchestra

EROICA

Our season of heroes begins with Beethoven's monumental Symphony No. 3, The Eroica (Heroic Symphony). Although the work was originally dedicated to Napoleon, that dedication was withdrawn once Napoleon declared himself Emperor! The Classical Series opens with Beethoven's Egmont Overture portraying the life and heroism of the 16th-century Count of Egmont. YSO principal trumpeter Nathan Clark will also perform the Hummel Trumpet Concerto.

The YSO pays homage to America's greatest musical hero, Leonard Bernstein, during his 100th birthday in 2018 with concertmaster Denise Dillenbeck performing his Serenade inspired by Plato--a hero of ancient philosophy. The evening concludes with Johannes Brahms' epic first symphony, which established the composer as Beethoven's successor--a very heroic feat!

Additionally, our concert commemorates the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in a piece using Robert Kennedy's speech in the wake of MLK's tragic assassination. The heroic adventure continues with Beethoven's Overture to Leonore, the story of a heroine rescuing her husband from death in a political prison. The program finishes with Bruckner's powerful fourth symphony, a work that is subtitled "The Romantic" due to its underlying program relating to medieval knights, nature, and birdsong.
