Most days this is just a nice and short read that adds a gleam of joy to my day. Other days this really scratches me where I itch. For example, at the end of our last school year I felt a lot of time pressure to plow ahead with our school work. I felt behind and like we should limit out of the house opportunities to accomplish my scholastic goals. Then the opportunity to attend the parade of the 2020 graduating class of Kutztown Area High School came up. We had some friends in that class and it seemed right to take the afternoon, pick up some balloons at the Dollar Store and situate our family along the parade route to encourage our friends. I was a little conflicted about the decision because my son was writing a ten-page research paper and had a deadline. After reading the Daily Encouragement, which addressed the idea that education is much more than doing lesson number 74 in the math book, my heart was quieted about our plans. We enjoyed the parade. The graduates enjoyed being celebrated. It was a win/win and we will always remember it. I’m not so sure we would remember whatever school work we would have accomplished if we had stayed home. And yes, he did finish his research paper on time. The Etiquette Factory: monica@Monica Irvine has created a variety of resources. We attended one of her webinars about gentlemanly behavior. We also did her life skills class, which addressed a variety of etiquette situations such as putting aside your electronics to greet someone, how to be gracious when you receive a gift you don’t really like, etc. She has a lot of resources.Character Health: characterhealth.storeC.S. Lewis said, “Education without values, as useful as it is, seems rather to make man a more clever devil.”Steve and Megan Scheiber developed the Character Health ministry after Steve survived 9/11. He was scheduled to be the pilot of one of the airplanes that was hijacked. A senior pilot bumped him from the assignment. Steve felt that God spared his life for a reason. The Character Health ministry was formed.Institute for Biblical Parenting: “Parenting is heart work.” Scott Turansky and Joanne Miller have a lot of resources to support parents in an effort to effectively train and teach children by connecting with the heart of the child. Every time this duo speaks at the homeschool convention, I am in the audience. My oldest daughter, who has three small children, is currently borrowing a CD set of theirs that I purchased years ago.Child Diagnostics: Dianne Craft is an encouraging and gracious educator whose aim is to do no harm while helping children be set free from learning disabilities. She has resources to help struggling learners with problems they face from autism, Asperger’s, ADD, ADHD, dyslexia, dysgraphia, sensory processing disorders and more. She encourages a three-pronged approach of brain integration therapy, right brain teaching methods and targeted nutritional strategies.
