Mental Health and Physical Wellbeing
This month we focus on some examples of where physical conditions, such as the Menopause or Arthritis, have an impact on our mental health. And we talk about how the mental health aspects of most physical conditions have an impact on our performance and attendance at work.
We also look at problem gambling and how the growth in accessible online smartphone gambling can trap people in a spiral of addiction. Support for people with an addiction to gambling is provided by our employee assistance helpline, and also by special gambling addiction charities.

Gambling Awareness
Gambling is something that has become more and more a part of everyday life, as more betting shops appear and much more advertising is seen on T.V. and posters depicting the fun loving aspect of this activity.
For many people this is not a concern, but there is currently an increase in compulsive gambling as people from all walks of life, who initially may play `just for fun', find themselves caught up in wanting more of the `buzz' of `being in action' or use gambling as a means of emotional escape.
This is far more of an issue than a desire to win money. This is known as the `hidden addiction' because, unlike substance abuse, there is no visible sign of what is happening.
The negative impact on the gamblers and their families' lives can be much more rapid than substance addiction because large amounts of money can be lost in a short space of time.

Connecting carers
Carers Week brings together a number of charities including Rethink Mental Illness to help support carers. 78% of carers have reported su ering from stress and anxiety as a result of missing out on support, part of the issue being that they are not recognised for their work.
If you are a carer or know a carer, know that you are not alone and your community can support you.
Talk to someone if you are feeling low or are going through a particularly stressful day.
Take `me-time' when possible and do something that makes you happy.
Practice acceptance; some things can't change, know that you are doing the best you can.
Lastly, be hopeful!

Rheumatoid Arthritis and Mental Health
There is a common misconception that Arthritis only a ects people over a certain age. Comments such as `My grandmother has that' contribute not only in the continued misunderstanding, but also in the correlation between mental health and rheumatoid arthritis. People living with chronic pain such as RA have an increased risk of developing depression, nearly three times more likely than the general population.
Undiagnosed depression is a common concept in chronic illness. Due to the nature of conditions, symptoms such as poor sleep and lack of appetite are easily linked to the physical pain the person may be living with as opposed to their mental health.
For those with RA or those people who have relatives with the condition, it is important to be mindful and identify the best way to move forward. The National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society have a selfmanagement tool to support those living with RA. It works best for people that have had the condition for over a year. Here are some of the topics they cover:
Getting the best from your medication
Managing flares, pain and fatigue
Managing anxiety and depression
Communicating with your healthcare team

Menopause in the workplace
Menopause in the workplace has been recently in the spotlight and there is a clear relationship between mental health and the support that can be accessed. 1 in 4 women consider leaving work because of the bad experience and lack of support they have had. In this digital age, help is accessible to support those going through the menopause through a new mobile app.
