2 WAMC PROGRAM GUIDE
FROM ALAN
ALAN CHARTOCK
repeating the same information to each patient.
This is a column about moderating Medical Monday on Vox Take the case of the aforementioned pancreatic cancer.

these good folks think that fluoridation is a communist plot or that various diseases are caused by some government action or that the chem trails you see in the sky are really people trying to poison the population. But these accusations are few and far between.
We have had several programs about Alzheimer's Disease and about the ongoing progress that has been made in that field. The projections for the numbers of us who will end up with the disease is staggering. On most of these shows, the phone lines are all filled up
For the most part, the doctors on the Vox Pop are incredibly impressed by the quality and depth of the questions
and that just proves that we are doing a service I simply don't see anywhere else.
and the intelligence of the callers. Nevertheless, while most
people love the show there will always be those who try to
do some damage -- sometimes thinking that they are funny
in a very strange kind of way. One time we had a plastic
surgeon on and a caller wanted to know if he could recre-

in a record-breaking time.
People either love or hate Medical Monday, but I do know for some folks, it has literally been a lifesaver. I am certainly not a physician but over the years I have learned a lot and have come to understand how many of the callers feel. I know, for example that some cancers are curable while others, like pancreatic cancer, are real trouble. In the many years I have been doing the show I have seen real progress in the field of medical research and have watched as new medications and treatments have extended life spans. Take all forms of diabetes. New medicines have added years to the lives of people who would have been dead years before. When I was younger, I knew a guy who had diabetes and went blind as a result. He died what I would classify as a very early death. Now there are home dialysis units and various insulin pumps and new pharmaceuticals. On the other hand, some callers take grave exception to some of the new medications. For example, I've heard from several folks who think that statins are the devil's curse. Doctors tell me all the time that they really value the program because they can get so much valuable information out to so many people at once, instead of sitting in an office

PROGRAM NOTES
KRISTIN GILBERT
The 2017/2018 Metropolitan Opera season is winding down and April will be the last full month of opera broadcasts. After the final Met opera of the season on May 5th, we will return to our normal programming and Radio Deluxe will move back to the Saturday 2PM-4PM airtime. Saturday, April 7th, 2018 @1PM--Lucia di Lammermoor (Gaetano Donizetti)
The role of the fragile title heroine who teeters between love and madness is shared by sopranos Olga Peretyatko-Mariotti and Pretty Yende, who have each impressed audiences with dazzling bel canto portrayals at the Met. Vittorio Grigolo and Michael Fabiano share the role of her lover in this chilling production by Tony Award-winning director Mary Zimmerman. Roberto Abbado conducts.
Saturday, April 14th, 2018 @1PM--Luisa Miller (Verdi)
Pl?cido Domingo adds yet another role to his legendary Met career in this rarely performed Verdi gem, a heartwrenching tragedy of fatherly love. Sonya Yoncheva sings the title role opposite Piotr Beczala in the first Met performances of the opera in more than ten years. Bertrand de Billy conducts.
Saturday, April 28th, 2018 @1PM--Cendrillon (Massenet) "Glorious," raved the New York Times when Joyce DiDonato sang the title role of Cendrillon at the Royal Opera in 2011. "Her performance was thoroughly enchanting." Now, for the first time ever, Massenet's sumptuous take on the Cinderella story comes to the Met, with DiDonato starring in the title role. She is paired with mezzo-soprano Alice Coote in the trouser role of Prince Charming, Kathleen Kim as the Fairy Godmother, and Stephanie Blythe as the imperious Madame de la Halti?re. Bertrand de Billy conducts Laurent Pelly's imaginative storybook production.
Saturday, May 5th, 2018 @1PM--Rom?o et Juliette (Gounod) Bartlett Sher's production of Gounod's sumptuous Shakespeare adaptation was a hit of the 2016?17 Met season ("a revelation" declared the Huffington Post). Now the sweeping tragedy returns with Ailyn P?rez and Bryan Hymel, both celebrated in French repertoire, as the star crossed young lovers. Pl?cido Domingo conducts.
Saturday, April 21st, 2018 @1PM--The Exterminating Angel (Ad?s) Following the rapturous response to his last opera, The Tempest, the Met presents the American premiere of Thomas Ad?s's The Exterminating Angel, inspired by the classic Luis Bu?uel film of the same name. Hailed by the New York Times at its 2016 Salzburg Festival premiere as "inventive and audacious ... a major event," The Exterminating Angel is a surreal fantasy about a dinner party from which the guests can't escape. Tom Cairns, who wrote the libretto, directs the new production, and Ad?s conducts his own adventurous new opera. Music by Thomas Ad?s, libretto by Tom Cairns in collaboration with the composer, based on the screenplay by Luis Bu?uel and Luis Alcoriza
