60 Minutes/Vanity Fair PollFirst FamiliesOctober 5-8, 2015Which one of the following comes closest to your idea of an ideal presidential family? – 1. Admired and close to perfect, 2. Accomplished but with a scandal or two, 3. Relatable but flawed, 4. A total mess, making the rest of us feel better.Americans don’t want a perfect First FamilyIt would seem that Americans would rather have a First Family that is relatable over one that is perfect. 41% of Americans think the ideal presidential family can be flawed as long as it is relatable, more than the 29% who would prefer a First Family that is admired and close to perfect. 18% want a family that is accomplished, but with a juicy scandal or two thrown in, while just 4% want a First Family that is a total mess in order to make themselves feel better.Older Americans are less impressed by “relatability”. While Americans under 65 strongly favor a First Family that is relatable but flawed, seniors 65 and older prefer a family in the White House that is close to perfect. The Ideal First Family Would Be…TotalAge 18-64Age 65+Relatable but flawed41%43%33%Admired and close to perfect292738Accomplished with a scandal or two181912A total mess 4 3 7Which one of the following would be most likely to make a presidential family more likeable to the American public? 1. A friendly dog that occasionally bites reporters, 2. A live-in older relative with a stern manner and a heart of gold, 3. A mild medical condition for which it can raise awareness, 4. A child who is embarrassed by having to wear braces.Forget the pooch, bring in Grandma. What addition would make a First Family more likeable? The first choice from a list of four is having a live-in older relative with a heart of gold (32%), which edges out having a mild medical condition for which to raise awareness (24%). Having a friendly pooch that bites reporters comes in third (18%), followed by a child who is embarrassed to wear braces (13%).Republicans and independents think having a live-in older relative is best, while Democrats are torn between a live-in older relative and a mild medical condition.Which Would Make a First Family More Likeable?TotalRepsDemsIndsA live-in older relative with a heart of gold32%33%31%32%A mild medical condition to raise awareness24202924A friendly dog that bites reporters18191618A child embarrassed to wear braces13141411Which of the following television families comes closest to the type of family you would like to see in the White House? 1. The Griffins from Family Guy, 2. The Dunphy-Pritchett-Tuckers from Modern Family, 3. The Johnsons from Blackish, 4. The Keatons from Family Ties, 5. The Huangs from Fresh Off the Boat, 6. The Cleavers from Leave it to Beaver, 7. The Ingalls from Little House on the Prairie.Americans harken to frontier times when thinking of the ideal family in the White House. If Americans were to model the First Family on a fictional family from television, the top choice would be the hard-working, farm-owning Ingalls as portrayed on NBC’s Little House on the Prairie from 1974-1983. The Ingalls are chosen by 24% of Americans, ahead of the classic suburban nuclear family of the 1950s and 1960s - the Cleavers in Leave it Beaver (14%), and the less-than-perfect blended Dunphy-Pritchett-Tucker family in Modern Family (13%). Further down on the list are the generationally and ideologically divided Keatons from Family Ties (12%), the blue collar cartoon family of the Griffins in Family Guy (9%), or two families dealing with their racial and ethnic identities while living in predominantly white neighborhoods – the Johnsons from Blackish (7%) and the Huangs from Fresh Off the Boat (2%). While the Ingalls are the top choice of Americans over 30 (followed by the Cleavers and the Keatons), Americans under 30 are less enamored with the frontier family. Instead, their top choice is the messy but more current Dunphy-Pritchett-Tuckers from Modern Family (29%), followed by the Griffins from Family Guy (22%).Which Television Family Would You Like in the White House?Total18-2930+The Ingalls (Little House on the Prairie)24%12%27%The Cleavers (Leave it to Beaver)14 716The Dunphy-Pritchett-Tuckers (Modern Family)1329 9The Keatons (Family Ties)12 215The Griffins (Family Guy) 922 6The Johnsons (Blackish) 7 7 7The Huangs (Fresh Off the Boat) 2 4 2Don’t know171718Republicans clearly favor the Ingalls (32%), as do independents (23%), while Democrats are split between the Ingalls (20%) and the Dunphy-Pritchett-Tuckers (19%). Accepting sexual favors from prostitutes in Thailand, 5. Receiving a presidential pardon for a cocaine conviction, 6. Giving all family money to the poor and joining Teach for America.Presidential relatives may do crazy things, but they won’t give away all their money. In reality, even presidential families aren’t perfect. Many recent presidents have had relatives that have done crazy things, but some Americans know that one thing that hasn’t been done by a presidential relative is to give away all their money. 29% of Americans correctly reason that giving away all their money and joining Teach for America is something that has not been done by a member of a president’s family. But other Americans pick familial activities that really did embarrass their relatives in the White House. 11% picked visiting prostitutes in Thailand, something allegedly done by former President George W. Bush’s brother, Neil. 10% picked receiving a pardon for a cocaine conviction and 7% picked accepting money for presidential pardons, both activities associated with President Clinton’s brother, Roger. 7% pick trading on the presidential name to sell beer and 5% pick lobbying for foreign governments, including Libya, which are both activities associated with President Carter’s brother, Billy.Which Was NOT Done by a President’s Family Member?Giving away your money and joining Teach for America29% Visiting prostitutes in Thailand11Receiving a pardon for a cocaine conviction10Trading on name to sell beer 7 Accepting money for presidential pardons 7Lobbying foreign governments 5Don’t know32What should Secret Service agents do if they witness safe but inappropriate behavior by the presidential children they are assigned to protect - inform the President and the First Lady or keep the incident to themselves?Americans think the Secret Service should tattle on the First Kids.Sometimes it’s the children in the White House who may engage in inappropriate behavior. If so, what should the Secret Service do who are hired to protect them – inform the President and the First Lady because it is their right to know, or not say anything to maintain the trust of the “First Kids”?Americans overwhelmingly feel the Secret Service should tell the President and the First Lady if they witness safe but inappropriate behavior – 81% think so. Just 16% think they should keep the matter to themselves, though younger Americans are a little more likely to think they should keep quiet.Should the Secret Service Tattle on the First Children?Total18-4950+Yes81%78%85%No162011If you were President and had school aged children, how would you want them to receive their education?Forget sending an example, just send them to private school. One decision presidential parents of school age children must make is where to send their kids to school. While Amy Carter attended public school in Washington D.C., both President Clinton and President Obama sent their children to private school instead.Americans are more likely to go the Clinton or Obama route if they were president and had school age children in the White House. 48% say they would send their children to private school if they had the chance, while 35% would send them to public school. Another 16% would have their children home schooled. When asked to pick from a list of clothing stores as to which is most appropriate for the children of U.S. presidents, 27% picked the discount retailer Target – the top choice – ahead of American Eagle (22%) and J. Overall, Americans pick the Republican dads who both had college age daughters when they took office - Richard Nixon (27%) and George W. Bush (27%) – followed by current president Barack Obama (23%) – who has two teenaged daughters in the White House. Far fewer pick either Jimmy Carter (11%) or Bill Clinton (7%) – both of whom also had their daughters go through their teenage years while they were president.Men and woman see things differently. While men think Nixon (32%) would be the toughest dad, followed by George W. Bush (28%), women think it’s Barack Obama (28%) that would be the hardest on a daughter’s potential first date. Data collection was conducted on behalf of CBS News by SSRS of Media, PA. Phone numbers were dialed from samples of both standard land-line and cell phones. The poll employed a random digit dial methodology. For the landline sample, a respondent was randomly selected from all adults in the household. For the cell sample, interviews were conducted with the person who answered the phone. Interviews were conducted in English and Spanish using live interviewers. The data have been weighted to reflect U.S. Census figures on demographic variables. The error due to sampling for results based on the entire sample could be plus or minus three percentage points. The error for subgroups may be higher and is available by request. The margin of error includes the effects of standard weighting procedures which enlarge sampling error slightly.
