One fifty minute private lesson per week. Lessons will be scheduled weekly. (Emphasis is on solo literature, etudes, and pursuit of students' individual goals.) Every student will receive at least 12-13 lessons each semester. Any special rehearsals where the instructor’s presence is required will count as the week’s lesson. If a student needs to reschedule a lesson, they are encouraged to do so well in advance of the lesson time. The amount of success is directly related to how much practice is done outside the lesson time. Daily practice is expected; two hours a day are recommended. Students should come to the lessons warmed up and fully prepared to play. The use of Musician’s Practice Planner is mandatory. Undergraduate Repertoire Requirement GuidelinesA. Audio/Visual Recording and Editing(Content/requirements of the studio class vary each semester.)III. Performance RequirementsA. Audition for ensemble and performance in a UTEP major ensemble. Exceptions during Covid-19 pandemicB. Jury - Required at the end of every semester unless the student has performed a recital that semester. Jury Requirements are:Performance of at least one complete movement of a solo, with piano accompaniment, unless the solo is unaccompanied.C. Student Recitals - In addition to the above performance requirements, all flute majors are encouraged to perform on at least one student recital (this may include performance during Flute Studio Class) per semester, even and especially during the semester that a recital is planned.D. Junior Recital - Required of performance majors. E. Senior Recital - Required of all performance and education majors. The recital should include 50 minutes of music for a performance major. The recital may be shared by education majors but must include at least 25 minutes of music.IV. Student Recital Attendance at UTEP Music Department Student Recitals is to be part of the grade in private lessons. All students enrolled in Applied Lessons must attend a minimum of twelve (12) Area and Departmental Recitals which take place every Friday at 1:30 p.m. in the Department of Music. Failing to attend twelve (12) required recitals will result in lowering Applied Lessons final grade by one letter. (This number may change because of the Covid-19 pandemic.) Makeup absences are accomplished by attending UTEP Music Department concerts and recitals. Non-University recitals/concerts such as El Paso Music Forum, El Paso Symphony, El Paso Wind Symphony, and Pro-Musica as well as any other performances given by our faculty and guests will be accepted. To receive credit for the makeup, a student must attend a music event. The program must be signed by a music faculty member who attended the same event. The program must be brought to the Music Office to record the attendance. Student name and ID# must be on the program. Without this information students will not receive credit. It is the student’s responsibility to turn the signed programs in to the main office by 5 p.m. on Friday of Finals Week. There will be no exceptions. Students must sign the makeup sheet every time they turn in a program. At the end, the office must have both, the program with the student’s information, and their signature matching the date. There will be no exceptions. Please notice: When a single area recital is cancelled, students will need to replace the cancelled recital by either going to a different area recital held at the same time or turning in a makeup recital. At the end of the semester, all students will have the same number of expected recitals. SPECIAL FLUTE STUDIO REQUIREMENT: All flute students will be in attendance at recitals/performances that their fellow flute players are performing in. Attendance will be taken. (These should also count for your required attendance at recitals each semester.).V. Musician’s Practice Planner – in addition to logging practice hours, the following things should be includedA. 1. Attendance to private lessons is mandatory. No un-excused absences are allowed. Make-up lessons for excused absences, including ONE “mental health” day, must be arranged beforehand (at least 24 hours in advance). Failure to do so will result in a forfeit of the lesson and the lowering of your grade by one full letter. An absence noted in advance of the lesson time for circumstances such as illness or personal emergencies may be made up at the discretion of the professor. B. Attendance to all flute solo and flute chamber music recitals as well as woodwind faculty recitals associated with the University of Texas at El Paso Department of Music is required. (Please see list of “Required Attendance” performances.) Please complete a recital review form and attach a copy of the program for each required recital attended and place in your practice companion. If you have a conflict with a UTEP sponsored or other required flute event that can absolutely not be resolved, you may make arrangements to attend the dress rehearsal for the event. Proper attire and etiquette is expected at all performances. B. Students are required to make their own arrangements regarding accompaniment and recital hall scheduling. C. Students are encouraged to subscribe to music periodicals and journals such as Flute Talk, The Flutist Quarterly, and Flute Wise.D. Materials borrowed from the flute studio including, but not limited to, music, magazines and recordings must be returned one week after check out. Failure to do so will result in a loss of privilege to the materials in the future. E. All Music Department undergraduate music majors enrolled in applied lessons are expected to experience a broad range of repertory through attendance at the many performance events offered each semester. Examples include recitals, guest artist concerts, ensemble concerts, chamber music concerts, opera and music theater productions, El Paso Symphony Orchestra, and the like.X. Special ConsiderationsOP 34.22 ADA STATEMENT: Any student who, because of a disability, may require special arrangements in order to meet the course requirements should contact the instructor as soon as possible to make any necessary arrangements. Students should present appropriate verification from Student Disability Services during the instructor’s office hours. Please note instructors are not allowed to provide classroom accommodations to a student until appropriate verification from Student Disability Services has been provided. For additional information, you may contact the Student Disability Services office .OP 34.19 ABSENCE DUE TO RELIGIOUS OBSERVANCE: A student who intends to observe a religious holy day should make that intention known to the instructor prior to the absence. A student who is absent from classes for the observance of a religious holy day shall be allowed to take an examination or complete an assignment scheduled for that day within a reasonable time after the absence. “Religious holy day” means a holy day observed by a religion whose places of worship are exempt from property taxation under Texas Tax Code 11.20. A student who is excused may not be penalized for the absence; however, the instructor may respond appropriately if the student fails to complete the assignment satisfactorily.OP 34.12 ACADEMIC INTEGRITY: It is the aim of the faculty of University of Texas at El Paso to foster a spirit of complete honesty and high standard of integrity. The attempt of students to present as their own any work not honestly performed is regarded by the faculty and administration as a most serious offense and renders the offenders liable to serious consequences, possibly suspension.ABSENCE DUE TO OFFICIALLY APPROVED TRIPS: The University of Texas at El Paso Catalog states that the person responsible for a student missing class due to a trip should notify the instructors of the departure and return schedule in advance of the trip. The student may not be penalized and is responsible for the material missed.LAST DAY TO DROP A COURSE: The last day drop a course is the 45th class day of the semester.XI Technology RequirementsAdditional course content is delivered via the Internet through the Blackboard learning management system. This will include scale exercises, etudes, and occasional videos. Ensure your UTEP e-mail account is working and that you have access to the Web and a stable web browser. Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox are the best browsers for Blackboard; other browsers may cause complications. When having technical difficulties, update your browser, clear your cache, or try switching to another browser. You will need to have access to a computer/laptop, a webcam, and a microphone. The music department has purchased a number of microphones which students may check out for the semester. They will also provide any music software that we will be using while we are having online lessons. Check that your computer hardware and software are up-to-date and able to access all of those programs. If you do not have a word-processing software, you can download Word and other Microsoft Office programs (including Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and more) for free via UTEP’s Microsoft Office Portal. Covid-19 AccommodationsStudents are not permitted on campus when they have a positive COVID-19 test, exposure or symptoms. If you are not permitted on campus, you should contact me as soon as possible so we can arrange necessary and appropriate accommodations. When we are allowed by the university to have on campus lessons, I will teach in my studio. Students who are considered high risk according to CDC guidelines and/or those who live with individuals who are considered high risk may contact Center for Accommodations and Support Services (CASS) to discuss temporary accommodations for on-campus courses and activities.XII. Covid-19 PrecautionsYou must STAY AT HOME and REPORT if you (1) have been diagnosed with COVID-19, (2) are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, or (3) have had recent contact with a person who has received a positive coronavirus test. Reports should be made at screening.utep.edu. If you know of anyone who should report any of these three criteria, you should encourage them to report. If you are feeling unwell, please let me know as soon as possible, and alternative instruction will be provided. Students are advised to minimize the number of encounters with others to avoid infection. Wear face coverings when in common areas of campus or when others are present. You must wear a face covering over your nose and mouth at all times in this class. If you choose not to wear a face covering, you may not enter the classroom. If you remove your face covering, you will be asked to put it on or leave the classroom.
