Patient advice sheet

PIPJ dislocations and ligament injuries

This leaflet explains the nature of your injury and how to manage it best to get a good outcome.

You have injured the middle joint of your finger, which may include one or more ligamentous structures. (See diagram).

Healing: This normally takes approximately 6-8weeks to heal and longer for the finger to regain movement and for the swelling to settle. You may be buddy taped if support is required. Remove this after 6 weeks.

Pain and swelling: Take your normal painkillers if it is painful. Elevation can be beneficial in the first week in the presence of increased swelling. You may find it continues to be a bit achy and swollen for a few months after your injury.

Using your hand: You may use the hand as pain allows; avoid heavy activities and any force bending your finger backwards for at least 4-6 weeks.

It is very important to keep the finger bending to limit stiffness.

Exercises: To be done every 2 hours, 5 repetitions each exercise.
