Priority School Parent Notification American Way Middle School 3805 American Way Memphis TN, 38118September 28, 2020Dear Parent or Guardian,Each year the Tennessee Department of Education examines schools’ performance across several different indicators to provide an overall look at how schools are serving the needs of all students. The department of education included the following indicators in its analysis of school accountability:Student achievementStudent growthEnglish learner proficiency exam (ELPA)Chronic absenteeismReady graduate (high school only)Graduation rate (high school only)More information on each of these indicators and the data used to define them can be found in the 2019 Accountability Protocol. Under the federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), the department is required to use the school accountability results to identify those schools with the lowest performance and the lowest performance across student groups (e.g., individual racial/ethnic student groups, students with disabilities, economically disadvantaged, and English learners). These schools will receive additional supports from the department. However, due to school closures resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, any school identified for CSI/Priority in the 2017-18 school year will maintain that identification status in the 2020-21 school year. We are writing to inform you that American Way Middle School was identified as a Priority School as required by ESSA and the U.S. Department of Education during the 2017-18 school year and will therefore maintain that designation during the 2020-21 school year. Our school is working hard with the state and district to improve outcomes for our students. An academic enrichment period has been added to the master schedule for all students. This period allows for the re-teaching of skills and standards, small group and/or one to one instruction, and interactive online learning designed to assess students and provide more individualized instruction based on each student’s unique needs. Our school staff will also work together diligently to meet the learning and behavioral needs of students while continuously building teacher capacity through ongoing professional development. We encourage you to help by participating in the development and implementation of our school improvement plan and/or to get involved in our efforts to address our academic challenges. Parents assist by working with their students on schoolwork, attending parent conferences and parental involvement activities (virtual & in-person), reading our Week at Glance, flyers, and monthly calendars and making sure their children attend school daily. Also, we invite you to participate in the following opportunities that will be publicized on our upcoming monthly calendars (due to Covid-19 many of these opportunities will be virtual): Curriculum Nights to address Reading, Math, Social Studies, and Science improvement.Academic deficiencies meetings to address corrective actions needed in all subjectsParent/Teacher Conferences (district days)Grandparents’ LuncheonParent Chew & Chats to discuss your child’s data and ways you can help in the classroom and at home.Parental Workshops & Community Outreach ProgramsPlease let me know if you have any questions about our school’s efforts to improve or how parents can support those efforts.
