Basis Weight - The basis weight refers to the weight in pounds of 500 sheets of paper (a ream) when it has been cut to that paper's standard basic size.

12 The basic size for Basis 80 (80 pound) cover is 20”X26”, so a ream of this basic size weighs 80 pounds

G/m2 or gsm - The basis weight of paper based on weight in grams per square meter

“M” Weight – This is the weight per thousand sheets of the finished size of the paper

UPC – This is the Universal Product Code. The code is printed as a bar code that can be read by electronic scan devices

Paper Quantities

It is important to understand that a “ream” of paper is technically 500 sheets

Paper is available in many different package and carton quantities

There are some general quantities

Bond, ledger, Offset, and Book weights typically are packaged in quantities of 500 sheets per package with 10 packages and 5,000 sheets per carton

Heavy coated Book Weight papers may be packaged in quantities of 250 sheets per package with 6 packages and 3,000 sheets or 8 packages and 4,000 sheets per carton

Cover, Index, Vellum Bristol, and Tag usually are packaged 250 sheets per package with 8 packages per carton

Many double thick, or pasted Cover grades are packaged 125 sheets per package with 10 packages and 1,250 sheets per carton

When a customer asks for a ream of paper it is a safe practice to clarify the package quantity and desired finished quantity that the customer is looking for

Because paper types and vendors vary, it is critical to read package labels carefully to insure accuracy
