Course Description Guide 2018-2019 (Semester 2)AMAZING RACE – WORLD GEOGRAPHY (5-10)Class Description: Travel the world learning about Geography and cultures through completing various tasks. Mrs. ReedyBALLET (K-10) Class Description: Come learn the mastery of movement with the artistry of expression. Students will learn creative and classical ballet, character, and modern dance concepts. Students will learn to create and evaluate choreography individually and as a group. Ballet shoes and comfortable clothing is required. Mrs. CiceroBUILDING MODELS (K-10)Class Description: Would you like to plan, design, and build models of buildings as you learn about the history, art, and engineering of homes in the United States? We'll have some hands-on activities to learn about the types of forces and loads architects need to consider when building and learn about the reasons people chose to build in certain places and with certain materials. You will gain skills in modeling with clay, wood, and cardboard,?then learn how to paint and put the finishing details on your models! Ms. ZemanCARD MAKING (K-10)Class Description: Make cards each week that go along with upcoming months to have a collection. Promotes writing and crafting. Mrs. ReedyCATS OF THE WESTERN HEMISPHERE (K-5 & 3-5) Class Description: Are you curious about the thirteen species of wild cats that call the Western Hemisphere home? Do you want to learn how to draw and paint the faces of cats and their body positions? This class is art-based learning about the cats of North and South America. Draw, paint, collage, and print what you learn about their anatomy and how the cats fit into the biomes they live in. Students will use art techniques to show the knowledge they gain about the thirteen species of wild cats in the Western Hemisphere. Ms. ZemanCLAY EXPERIENCE (K-10 & 3-5) Class Description: Fire up your imagination and get your hands into the nitty-gritty of making art! You’ll learn basic information about clay: its scientific properties, the hand-building with clay, applying texture, and surface decoration. The whole class will work together on themes it chooses from a list. The list includes themes such as (In the Garden, For the Birds, By the Sea, On the Beach, Hanging Around, Boxed In, Abstracts are a Ball, etc.). They will make objects like tiles, sculptures, or containers. Our emphasis will be on objects that are skillfully made according to the level of mastery of each student. Mrs. ZemanCOOKING AROUND THE WORLD (5-10)Class Description: This will be a cooking class for the adventurous! We will explore various countries around the world and prepare a dish from that country. We will also learn the way they may eat that meal; with their hands, sitting on the floor, chopsticks, etc.? Some of our dishes will be well known while others may be flavors or dishes that you have never tasted or even heard of before. Mrs. HagedornCOUNTRY DANCE (5-10) Class Description: Learn various country line dances and swing dances. Mrs. ReedyECONOMICS (3-5)Class Description: Ever wonder what it takes to run a business? Come be an entrepreneur with us and learn the basics of business. Mrs. BrownEDITING LIKE AN ARTIST (3-10)Class Description: We will explore different art styles such as Impressionism, Pop Art, Art Deco, Cubism and more. Students will use their smart devices with editing software to create photographs to interpret the different art styles. Students will select an artist to study. Students need to have access to a smart device such as a tablet, iPhone, iPod, iPad, or similar device at home. If they can bring the device to school it would be beneficial but not necessary. (Non apple devices will have similar apps but not always the same app so bringing those to class will be particularly helpful.) We will be using different apps for editing and correlating those editing techniques to the artists that have used similar styles in their art form. Edited artwork will need to be emailed weekly to the instructor for class. Mrs. Poolman-JacksonESCAPE! (K-4)Class Description: We will be learning to solve different kinds of puzzles (Logic Puzzles, Math Puzzles, Cryptic puzzles, Word puzzles, Trivia puzzles, Riddles, Pattern Guessing) and using those puzzle types to design an escape room! Mrs. HagedornEVERYDAY EXERCISE (2-10) Class Description: In Everyday Exercise, Kids will be engaged in fun fitness activities to help build strength and stamina. Kids will enjoy cardio conditioning, strength training, endurance exercises, circuit workouts, wellness discussions, games, and more! Mrs. WollerFAIRY TALE (K-2)Class Description: Join us as we jump into the magical land of fairy tales. We will be reading numerous fairy tales and completing activities for each story. Students will experience making fairy play dough, comparing different tales, conducting a puppet show, and creating their own fairy tale. Mrs. LuseGET WIRED! (2-10) Class Description: And beaded, coiled, corded, enameled, knotted, strung, threaded, and zipped when you learn various techniques of jewelry making! Adorn yourself by bending and weaving wire, enameling pendants, cording, sewing, knotting, and making and stringing beads. Ms. ZemanGREEK MYTHOLOGY + WRITING (3-5)Class Description: Who was the guy who had the lightning bolt staff? Which lady had hair full of snakes? What about that story I heard about the king who turned everything into gold? These are just a few of the myths we will learn about in the Great Greek Myths class. Students will also learn about the origin of mythology, how it influenced early understandings of our world, and practice with writing their own myth. We will toss around a few Greek and Latin roots and add in some early Greek and Roman history as well. Great golly, this class will be a mythical good time! Mrs. BosworthGYMANASTICS (K-10) Class Description: Learn basic techniques in tumbling, and more.? Front, back, and pike rolls, cartwheels, backbends, splits, front and back walk overs, aerials, front and back flips.? Learn a routine to perform at spotlight. Mrs. ReedyINTRO TO SPANISH (6-10)Class Description: This class is designed for the first-time Spanish learner.? Students will learn basic Spanish vocabulary, greetings, and phrases through a variety of fun activities.Mrs. VallanceLEADERSHIP (6-10)Class Description: Learn positive mindset strategies and help make Home Works an even better place for students through school activities. Mrs. BrownMANNERS MATTER! (K-5 & 6-10)Class Description: Social skills and proper etiquette contribute to better communication in any environment. This class will focus on everything from first impressions and table settings to hand-written thank you notes and greetings in various languages. We will conclude the end of the semester with a tea party where we will use all we have learned! Mrs. HagedornMATHEMATICS FOR ROCKETRY (6-10) Class Description: The structural elements that hold together an aerospace vehicle must be strong and as lightweight as possible to minimize the fuel needed to reach an altitude. ?As future engineers you will strive to develop new materials and methods of structural design. In this challenge, students will undertake the problem of designing a strong but lightweight thrust structure that can withstand the launch of a rocket. By using simple materials such as pvc, craft sticks, cardboard, and a hot-melt glue, students will strive to make their structure lighter while maintaining its strength. The goal is to construct and launch a rocket that can withstand the force of repeatedly launching a one-kilogram?one meter into the air.?The scientific focus is on understanding forces, structures and energy transfer.Mr. Durst/Mrs. ZemanMEXICAN CULTURE & CUISINE (3-5 & 6-10)Class Description: Students will learn about Mexico's diverse culture through fun activities and crafts.? Discover the true flavors of Mexico by preparing and tasting authentic Mexican food.Mrs. VallanceMIGHTY MATH (K-2)Class Description: Students in mighty math will have fun engaging in math practice focusing on number sense. Students will work with place value, mental math, problem-solving strategies, number talks, and games. We will work independently, in small groups and as a whole group on various related math activities. We want our students to feel mighty in math- and ready for future math challenges! Mrs. BosworthMINECRAFT EDU (5-10)Class Description: Explore and discover the possibilities of Minecraft in a creative and playful way. Students will explore real life buildings, practice adding and measuring. Plus apply reading and visual comprehension and finally learn about survival and organizational skills. Come have fun and Learn! Mr. SnowMORE ABAOUT COLOR! (K-5 & 5-10)Class Description: What is it and how do you see it? Science and art mingle in this study of light waves, seeing and perception, pigments and painting. Play with light paddles and LEDs, model the eye, paint, sculpt with paper, and combine colors in various ways with various materials. You’ll learn how the human eye works, color-blindness, about the visible light spectrum, how adjacent colors affect our perception of them, primary colors in light, pigment and printing; you’ll play with light, and use art media and LEDs in your art works! Ms. ZemanMY BEAUTIFUL MIND (K-2)Class Description: This class is to help create positive mindset habits. Mrs. BrownODYSSEY (6-10)Class Description: Introducing heroes, heroines, gods, and goddesses, this cooperative learning unit enables students to explore the mystical world of Greek mythology. Teams of three students work together to climb to the top of Mt. Olympus, reading myths and cooperatively analyzing two of the myths together. Mrs. LusePET STORE (3-10)Class Description: Own your own pet store. Learn about business, buying/selling, keeping inventory, costs, pricing, and managing/owning a business. Mrs. ReedyPHOTOGRAPY (Intro/Advance) (3-10)Class Description: Adventure into the world of photography! This class will cover the basics of photography, history of photography and look at many inspirational photographers from around the?world. This will give students a great base for jumping into our weekly projects where they will actually be going out and practicing their photography. Students need to have access to a camera and email to complete weekly projects.? Mrs. Poolman-JacksonROAD TRIP (3-6)Class Description: Learn about Geography, travel, attractions and monuments in the United States while planning your own road trip. Mrs. ReedyROLLER + COASTING INTO MATH (6-10)Class Description: Roller coasters and marble runs are based on science, math, and forces. In other words- physics! Taking a class called Physics 101 may not sound like it would be a good time, but a class learning about physics through?the building and testing of roller coasters and marble runs make the learning a lot more fun! In this class, we will learn about early philosophers and their beliefs about forces in our world. Students will also work on math practice applying formulas to find velocity, potential, and kinetic energy and of course design, build and test marble runs and roller coasters. This class will be a lot of work, thinking and even re-inventing, but it will also be a lot of fun! Hang on ...here we go! Mrs. BosworthSECOND STEP SPANISH (K-2 & 3-5)Class Description: Students will continue developing their knowledge of the Spanish language by building on what they have already learned.? We will continue learning through a variety of methods including: movement, song, dance, and role play.??Mrs. VallanceSEWING WITH MACHINES (5-10)Class Description: Students will choose from a variety of sewing projects that will allow them to learn and practice hand sewing, machine sewing, embellishing/beading, pattern making, quilting, and other techniques. Each student will work at their own pace and may complete one or more projects depending upon their time management and ambition. Mrs. HagedornTECHNOLOGY (2-4)Class Description: Join us for a technology filled class where we learn about a variety of computer applications and skills. Using Minecraft Education, we will create projects to learn about computer applications such as Microsoft Word and PowerPoint. We will also be learning how to use a keyboard to type efficiently using the in-game chat in Minecraft and an online keyboarding program. Computer skills are more important than ever! Why not have some fun while learning those skills?? Mr. SnowYARD GAMES (K-10)Class Description: Learn various yard games typically played in the summer. Horse shoes, Lawn Darts, Croquet, Bocce Ball, Frisbee golf and Cornhole. Mrs. ReedyYEARBOOK / BULLDOG NEWS (6-10) Class Description: We will be working on a monthly newspaper and the yearbook! Students will learn to write copy stories to photos that they take. Mrs. HagedornYO VOLCANO (3-5)Class Description: Students become volcanologists to try to reach the top of Pele’s Peak in Hawaii. Students will experience volcanic vocabulary, research a volcano, write a letter to a volcanologist, and build a volcano. Bring your trekking poles for this grand adventure.Mrs. LuseYOGA (K-10)Class Description: Come stretch, breathe, and relax in this fun-filled yoga class!? Students will learn several yoga poses to build strength, balance, and endurance, learn breathing techniques for breath awareness, practice mindfulness, and learn ways to focus on calming their minds through relaxation. I teach a variety of classes, from painting, Mixed Media, floral design, etc in the Cheney community. I am a lifelong student and am currently exploring a certification in Genealogy. I received my A.A.S. degrees from Spokane Community College in Floriculture, Landscape/Turf, and Greenhouse/Nursery. I worked as a Floral Manager for 6 years as well as own my own floral design business.? I am an independent clothing retailer and love working from home so that I can spend more time with my family and be involved in my community.2295525825500Mr. Snow - Alexei is a stem coordinator at Spokane County 4-H. He has been working as a science, technology, engineering, and math educator for 5 years doing everything from robotics to Minecraft education. Lastly he is currently a student at Spokane Falls Community College studying technical engineering.Mrs. Poolman-Jackson – Julie graduated from Eastern Washington University with a degree in Art and Mathematics. She formerly taught at Spokane Art School as well as taught at Home Works! Julie also has had her own photography business in Cheney for over 10 years and is a former Home Works! parent. Julie loves to use an interdisciplinary approach to teaching while using photography to encourage students’ curiosity for other subjects. Mrs. Reedy – Tanya graduated from Washington State University with a degree in Elementary education. She enjoys dance, scrapbooking and camping. She is an active member with 4-H with a Horse & Dog Group. She also enjoys traveling with her family.Mrs. Vallance – Kristal graduated from Central Washington University with a degree in Education and Spanish. She has been teaching English as a Second Language for many years and enjoys teaching language to international students and English-speaking students. She is looking forward to joining the Homeworks! team and sharing her passion for language!Mrs. Woller – Heather has taught a variety of classes at Home Works! over the past years and is also a homeschooling parent. She enjoys supporting students and families in homeschooling as well as sharing her many passions with students. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from EWU and is a Certified Aerobics and Yoga Instructor. She worked at Cat Tales Zoological Park for nearly 2 years and for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife as a fisheries biologist for almost 10 years.Ms. Zeman - Allison teaches a variety of fine art classes and has a B.S. degree in Apparel, Textiles, and Design, including a B.S. in Physical Geography and has been a Scientific Illustrator.
