I was the principle investigator on the University of Minnesota’s NIH, Building Interdisciplinary Research Career’s in Women’s Health (BIRCWH) K12 grant. I lead the design and the implementation of a comprehensive process and outcomes evaluation that provide for continuous quality improvement and strong scholar outcomes. I analyzed the data and wrote the manuscript.

This project was implemented through Community Outreach Core that I lead for Kola Okuyemi’s NCI U54 on cancer disparities. Dr. Pratt was a non-tenure track faculty member who successfully competed for a tenure-track assistant professor position while working with me on community-engaged research through the Outreach Core. In addition to resources offered through my Core, she was awarded an internal small grant to collect the data. I mentored her throughout the process.

When I was the associate dean for faculty affairs and development, I developed a request for applications to encourage the development of new mentoring models. Michael Pitt was one of the successful applicants. The idea for the new mentoring model was his. Through regular meetings, I gave feedback on the implementation and reviewed the progress of the program. I participated in reviewing the manuscript.

I was one of the five Principle Investigators of the NIH Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women’s Health K12 grants who designed a data collection instrument in an effort to describe the interdisciplinary mentoring teams that were a part of the programs. The data was collected by the Office of Research in Women’s Health and the co-authors analyzed the data and each wrote sections of the manuscript.

This data was collected based on a grant that I wrote in partnership with a community organization lead by Sirad Osman. Together we collected the data from focus groups and analyzed the qualitative data. Rebecca Pratt joined our team after the data collection was completed. She assisted in the data analysis and was the lead author on the manuscript.

I was an investigator and the psychiatrist on Michael Miner’s R01. I trained the research assistants on performing diagnostic interviews, monitored the enrollment process to make sure inclusion and exclusion criteria were met and gave input on how to analyze the data and report the data to make it clinically relevant. I wrote sections of the paper regarding clinical presentation and part of the discussion on the clinical relevance of the date. I reviewed and gave feedback on the entire manuscript.

The data for this publication came out of the Community Outreach Core that I led which was part of Kola Okuyemi’s NCI U54 on cancer disparities. I designed the projects for and wrote this section of the grant with input from community partners. I led the implementation of the program, was responsible for data acquisition, and led the qualitative analysis of the data. I wrote the manuscript with input from my collaborators.

I received grant funding to conduct a mental health needs assessment in the Latino immigrant and migrant community in Southern Minnesota. With my community partners, I conceptualized, developed and implemented the needs assessment. Carolyn Garcia, as assistant professor in the School of Nursing with an interest in Latino health was researching the same topic in an urban community. We decided to combine the data into a single publication together and she took the lead on analyzing and writing up the data.

This paper resulted from the work of an interdisciplinary team of psychologists and physicians practicing in this area. From our experience, a theoretical model of sexual health was developed. We based future work in the field on this model. I was responsible for the role of psychiatric services in the model and wrote this portion of the manuscript.

I lead a partnership that had representative from staff the Minneapolis Health Department and a Federally-Qualified Health Care Clinic to design a needs assessment for women who use their clinic services and suffer from postpartum depression. I wrote the grant, oversaw the data collection and analysis and prepared the manuscript for publication of our findings.

I led a community/university partnership with Sirad Osman, PhD, of New Americans Community Services to design a mental health needs assessment for the Somali Community in Minneapolis and St. Paul. I was the psychiatrist that was responsible for overseeing the psychiatric evaluations of the participants in the study. I supervised four psychology doctoral students who interviewed the participants using the Structure Clinical Interview for DSM-IV.

I provided career counseling and supported her desire to follow her passion and become a researcher. She received her PhD from Virginia Commonwealth University and continued to collaborate with me during her PhD studies. She used data from my lab in her PhD dissertation.

Ayan Ali, 2010-2011, Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP) directed research advisor.

I provided mentorship for Ms. Ali on here research project on Mental Health in Somali Women. She was awarded at small grant to support her project. I mentored her in during the preparation of her grant and the Institutional Review Board application. I supervised the implementation of the project and the presentoion the data.

Individual Faculty Mentoring

Imran Kawaja, MD, Associate Professor, Neurology with joint appointment in Psychiatry, University of Minnesota, 2012-2017.

I mentored Dr. Kawaja when he joined the faculty in the Department of Neuorlogy at the University of Minnesota. After five years, he left the University of Minnesota to become the Medical Director of the Center for Sleep Medicine at the VA Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. He is currently an associate professor in Psychiatry at UT Southwestern.
