This goes in the front of the children’s reading record book. Reception children begin by bringing home books that don’t have any words. These books are really important to help your child recognise the main characters and talk about the pictures in the book. As soon as the children are ready, they will begin bringing home books with words. Please write a comment in the reading record after reading with your child. Books will be changed on a Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. We aim to listen to each child read at least once a week. Reading Books with WordsWe now feel that your child is ready to move onto books with words. We use a reading scheme that relies entirely on children using their phonics skills to sound out words to read. (c-a-t is cat) Your child may still need some help to hear the word after they have said all the sounds. The more they practise, the sooner they will be able to do this independently. Our books also introduce ’tricky’ words as we teach them. (the, I, to, no...) Many of the books also include the character names we have been sending home. (Kipper, Mum, Biff...)This method of learning to read supports the current reading curriculum in Reception, Year One and the start of Year Two. We really want reading to be enjoyable for both you and your child. We have found for this to be most successful, it is best to read little and often. At this stage in your child’s reading, they will probably need to sound out the majority of words, which does take a lot of time and uses lots of their energy. For this reason, please feel free to read alternate pages for your child. As they build up speed and confidence, they will then be able to read more and more of the book to you. Please keep each book for as long as you feel it is beneficial for your child. We will continue to change books up to a maximum of three times a week.Talking about the pictures, predicting what might happen next and retelling the story at the end are also excellent ways to help your child understand and enjoy their books even more.If you have any questions, then please don’t hesitate to come and see us.The Lower Unit TeamI send this home after we have worked through Phase 2. ONLY to those who haven’t yet moved onto books with words and need a little more practise blending.Word ListsNow that your child knows the majority of sounds we have taught so far, we are going to begin focusing on reading simple words. Each child develops at their own speed and will begin to read words when they are ready. Practising little and often is the best way to support your child, without them becoming overwhelmed. We are going to start sending home a list of 10 words each week that can be read using your child’s developing phonics skills. Please encourage them to say the sound for each letter and then try to hear the word they are reading. If they are struggling, you can try saying the sounds for your child and see if they can then hear the word. ExampleYour child will look at the word ‘dig’. Encourage them to say the sounds in the word. ‘d – i - g’. They may need to say the sounds a number of times, getting quicker each time. The aim is for your child to then hear they have read the word ‘dig’. As time goes by, your child will start to hear the words more quickly and this in turn will help them to gain confidence. If you have any questions, then please don’t hesitate to come and see us.The Lower Unit Team ................
