An Original Title, Capitalized Like This

For this assignment, you are being asked to use a very specific format called “MLA”. This is how most university papers in the humanities are formatted. If you are careful and patient, you should be able to mimic this format exactly, and get a perfect score.

In MLA formatting, the margins on all sides are one inch. Microsoft Word often uses a 1.25 inch margin on the sides, so you may have to discover how to change that. Note that everything on this page is double-spaced. It is not single or 1.5 spacing.

The first line of every paragraph must be indented one half inch. There should be no space between the paragraphs. Only the line break and the indentation shows that a new paragraph has begun. Also, the font is 12 point, Times New Roman.

When you use the title of short texts such as short stories and poetry, you put the title in quotations; for example, “Mirror Image” and “Y.O.U.”. For longer texts such as novels or films, you should use italics; for example, To Kill a Mockingbird, and Slumdog Millionaire. When you are handwriting, you can underline instead of trying to create italics.

When you are using quotations from a text, or even when you are making indirect references, you should include the page number or line number. For example, I might note that Alice is described walking across her room “like a fashion model” (page 12), or that Asher Roth implies that his body is unchangeable (line 8).

You can do it! Just write your response first, and work on the formatting later. Good luck!
