MEASLES

The rash is blotchy and red and appears on the face and body around the fourth day of illness. It is at its most infectious from 2 or 3 days before the rash appears until 8 or 10 days after that date.

Immunisation can prevent this disease.

GERMAN MEASLES

The rash appears during the first day, and usually covers the body, arms and legs in small pink patches - it doesn’t itch. No other symptoms are usually present apart from occasional aching joints. It is infectious from two days before the rash appears, until the rash disappears in about four or five days from that date. The only danger is to unborn babies and therefore, it is important that all contacts are informed in order that any ladies who may be pregnant can contact their Doctor.

Immunisation (MMR) can now prevent this disease.

MUMPS

In mumps a tender swelling appears in front of and below on or both ears for a few days. There may be a mild rise in temperature. It is infectious from 2 or 3 days before the swelling appears until 8 or 10 days after that date. Antibiotics do not help.

Immunisation (MMR) can now prevent this disease.

HEAD LICE

These creatures contrary to popular belief prefer clean hair and therefore, not a sign of poor personal hygiene. Medicated head lotion can be obtained from the chemist without prescription.

COMMON ILLNESSES AND ACCIDENTS

Many common aches and pains can be easily treated at home without the need to consult a Doctor.

COLDS

Even in this day and age there is still no magic cure for the common cold. Go to bed and take plenty of drinks. If you have a headache or are feverish, take Aspirin or paracetamol. Do not bother to take antibiotics you may have in the house – these will have no effect.

NOSE BLEEDS

Sit in a chair and lean forward with your mouth open. Pinch the bridge of your nose firmly for about ten minutes. If the symptoms persist, recur frequently or are accompanied by headaches consult your Doctor.

BACK PAIN

The spine, being made up of 24 fragile bones and associated cartilage and tendons, supports the whole weight of the upper body, and therefore it is understandable that it sometimes goes wrong. If back pain persists for more than a few days it is advisable to consult your Doctor. If, as usual, the pain has been caused by abuse, ie. lifting too heavy weights, etc., be sensible and take things easy. Take care to sit as upright as possible with a support for the small of the back. Take aspirin or paracetamol, which will not only relieve the pain but will help to relieve the inflammation. Your Doctor may well prescribe stronger drugs, arrange for heat treatment, gentle exercise or some kind of support corset.

SPRAINS

Apply a cold compress, containing ice if possible, for 15 to 30 minutes to reduce swelling.

THE PATIENTS CHARTER

This practice is dedicated to provide quality health services, which meet the requirements of our patients. Our patients’ charter is displayed in the waiting room.

USE OF INFORMATION ABOUT PATIENTS

Walsall CCG will be annually visiting GP practices to carry out checks based on QOF (quality and service framework). This is part of the routine work of the Walsall CCG that is required by the government to provide assurance that public money is used properly. They will need to look at a random selection of patients’ medical records in the practice to do this work. This may require them to look at your medical records with the help of a nominated doctor. Everyone working on the NHS has a legal duty to keep information about you confidential and you have the right to say no if you do not want them to look at your medical records. If you would like to know more about access to your medical records you can speak to the person in charge of your care, or if you do not want them to look at your records please inform the practice manager in writing.

THE PRACTICE STAFF

All our practice staffs are bound by the same rules of confidentiality as the Doctors.

PRACTICE MANAGER

There is a qualified Practice Manager who is responsible for the smooth running of the practice administration. Should you have any queries or comments regarding the services the practice provides, she and the Doctor will be only too happy to discuss them.

RECEPTIONISTS

There are four part-time receptionists . All the reception staff has undergone extensive training. All our receptionists are available to answer your calls, take messages and deal with any queries. Sometimes, you may be asked for medical details in order that the receptionist can pass them to the doctor or nurse, who decides the urgency of the case or the advice to be given. This at times can be very difficult, so your understanding and patience is appreciated. The staffs are only trying to help both the Doctor and the patient. The Doctor, and one of our receptionists are able to speak with you in Hindi and Urdu if you are unable to speak English at all or English is not your first language.

PRACTICE NURSE

The practice has a registered nurse with extensive training and experience in the following areas: health promotion/lifestyle advice, health screening, women’s health including cervical cytology (smears), asthma and diabetic care, family planning and travel health including vaccination advice.

The nurses would be pleased to see you by appointment to discuss and offer advice/support regarding any aspect of your health/lifestyle.

BURNS

Apply large quantities of cold water to the affected area and maintain until the pain subsides. This may take as long as 15 minutes! If the skin is unbroken but blistered, apply a loose, dry dressing. If the burn is larger than four or five inches in diameter, of if the skin is broken, obtain medical advice as soon as possible.

DIARRHOEA

Prevent dehydration. People with diarrhoea, with or without vomiting, should have plenty of liquid. This should be in the form of a flat Cola drink (but not Diet Cola) or solution of glucose and salt as in Dioralyte or Rehydrat, which can be bought at the chemist without prescription. Take the liquid in small sips, not in large mouthfuls and not too soon after vomiting.

STOMACHACHE

Most attacks are not serious and are usually caused by indigestion or wind. A hot water bottle will often relieve the symptoms and in the case of indigestion a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda in half a glass of water will help.

CHICKENPOX

On the first day a rash appears as small red patches about 3-4mm across. Within a few hours of these developing, small blisters appear in the centre of these patches. During the next 3 or 4 days further patches will appear and the earlier ones will turn ‘crusty’ and fall off. Oily calamine lotion may be applied to soothe the often severe itching. Cool baths may also help. The most infectious period is from 2 or 3 days before the rash appears and up to 5 days after that date. Children may return to school as soon as the child is eating and sleeping well after that date.
