ASK schools why you didn’t get in:Look into Dental Therapy program at the U of M.If grades are low:Look into post bac programs. Start looking into these beginning of senior year if you don’t have any interviews before October. Some Masters programs are only a year long. If DAT is low:Retake it! But make sure to do better the second time.*Post Bac Pre Dental Programs: are many programs on this site. Some of the Dental Schools hold spots for students that excelled in their post bac programs and get admitted right away for the following year. Awesome huh? Those are main classes make sure to fit in the following: art (3-D drawing or sculpture), histology –offered at Concordia, statistics, Sociology, Philosophy, -I also took Dental Anatomy at Mstate. When Should I take the DAT?I recommend to take it after O chem because the sections on the DAT are Biology, Gen Chem, Ochem, Reading Comp, Quantitative Reasoning, and perceptual ability. Kaplan can be an asset in learning perceptual ability.Where should I VolunteerThe key to volunteering and it making a bigger impact on your application is to be involved in something for consecutive years.Bethany Home, Dorthy Day House, Red River Valley Dental Access Project, Big Brother Big Sister, Church, Campus Activities, Relay for LifeAlso if you want to try and go on a missions trip. There are some missions trips geared toward dental relief. (Global Dental Relief) The Cost of Applying to Dental SchoolSTART SAVING!!!The DAT costs about $300.Applying to 13 schools through AADSAS will cost about $2,000.Each individual school you apply to will ask for a supplemental fee at some time that range from $35-$80.For interviews you may need to drive or fly and stay at a hotel which can cost more money.Ready to Apply to Dental School?Start looking at schools on the internet sophomore year. Make a list of schools you like and what they requirements are. That way you can make sure to get in all the required classes AND a majority of the additional preferred classes too. Go on the website of to see a list of all the schools and what the GPA averages/DAT averages/Class Size etc. Look at what your GPA/DAT scores are and apply to schools accordingly.Go to AADSAS and print off the Application in Nov/Dec of junior year. It does not cost anything to set up an account. You will be signing up for an account for the previous years application cycle but it doesn’t matter because the application is going to be the same. This way you can see the layout and what character/spaces you are allotted for each section. You can type into it, save it and print it. This way when the application cycle opens for the year you want to matriculate you just have to transfer answers over! EASY!!Fill out the AADSAS Application Dec-Apr.Ask for Letters of Evaluations in March. Each school will want different types of letters so look at what each school wants. I have found the majority of schools can be satisfied by getting an evaluations from the following:Biology professorChemistry professorWork/VolunteerDentistA committee letter can satisfy some of the above but remember you can only submit 4 letters total through AADSAS.Have your Personal Statement done by April so professors can read it and have time to make corrections before school is done.First Monday in June – AADSAS opens – Copy and paste answers into AADSAS.Request transcripts to be sent to AADSAS. You can’t request transcripts early because you need to print of a “Transcript Verification Form” from your online AADSAS application that needs to be sent with your transcript.Q: Where do I forward my official transcripts? A: Forward your official transcripts to:ADEA AADSAS Transcript Processing CenterP.O. Box 9110Watertown, Massachusetts 02471? Q: Do I need to attach a form to my transcripts? A: It is mandatory to send the Transcript Matching Form to the registrar’s office to attach with your official transcript. The Transcript Matching Form is located?in the "Colleges Attended" section of the application checklist (ADEA AADSAS application homepage) next to each school that you have listed.?Letters of Evaluations can now be entered: There is a section on AADSAS where you can input and save who is writing your letters. An electronic email is sent to the evaluator. Your evaluator will then submit their letter that way. ***Send in AADSAS application when complete! DO NOT WAIT for letters of recommendations. It takes 6-8 weeks to process AADSAS application and Letters of evaluations are not needed to process application. Transcripts ARE NEEDED to process AADSAS application though.Majority of schools are rolling admissions, the earlier you apply the better chance you have. Shoot for having AADSAS application submitted by end of June and all supplementals completed by end of July.Secondary ApplicationsSome will be sent to you in the mail (University of Nebraska Medical Center)Some will need to be filled out online through the schools website portal: University of Minnesota, University of North Carolina, Michigan, LECOM, Please contact me if you would like the some supplemental questions I received from schools I applied to.You can work on some of the secondary apps while your AADSAS app is being processed. DO NOT wait to send everything together.ShadowingWear dress pants, nice shirt, comfortable shoes, hair back, no perfume, no big jewelry.Call offices and ask if you can shadow the dentist. (make sure to shadow various dentists: general, ortho, pediatric, endodontic ect.)Make a Word Doc or Journal that you can write down all the dentists you shadowed. Make sure to include the date, number of hours and what you saw. Some people I know brought in a little note pad and pen while shadowing.Pre Dental Programs to do:University of Minnesota Pre Dental Preparation Course. Sign up online. This one is fantastic! Try and research other ones. I wish I did more of these to help my application.More questions? If anyone has any additional questions send me an email, text or call me: 651-353-9878, bergean12@ ................
