Module 10: Curriculum Implementation

1. Describe how you would use each of the curriculum implementation models presented in the readings to facilitate curriculum change.

2. Which of the curriculum implementation models presented in the readings is the most consistent with your way of thinking? Why?

Curriculum Implementation Models

Overcoming Resistance to Change (ORC)

Administrators, directors, teachers, and supervisors are the key players in this model.

As the curriculum leader in this model I would meet with all staff members to begin the initial planning for the implementation of the new program. . An informed staff who is directly involved in the early implementation of new curriculum is vital for a successful program. . Personal concerns, task-related concerns, and impact-related concerns would be addressed quickly in order to keep all staff members informed about shared concerns. These concerns could be gathered through surveys and on the school’s online teacher chat room. Weekly meetings would be held to map out strategies for dealing with concerns. The key to this models it to keep communication open in order to provide support for all staff members.

Organizational Development (OD)

This model’s key players are administrators, directors, and supervisors.

I would use the OD model as an ongoing with teams within the school working together to identify the school’s current and anticipated needs curriculum needs. Team collaboration would be the key to this program. Teams would meet weekly to discuss new programs, new materials, new research, and new ideas in either three one hour or one three-hour curriculum planning blocks in addition to there regularly scheduled planning time. Through constant collaboration the curriculum is individualized to the current of future needs of both the teacher and student to insure that “optimal learning occurs”(p.307).

Organizational Parts, Units, and Loops

Administrators, directors, teachers, and supervisors are the key players in this model.

I would use this model to correct changes that need to be made in the curriculum. The model would have higher and lower teams and the interplay among overlapping teams. . The teams would try to come up with a solution to a problem that everyone concerned with the change will be winning to accept the change. The teams would reach consensus, which would be a “win-win” solution to the problem.

Educational Change Model

In this model I would meet with the administrators, teachers, students, school board, community, and government members to identify the need for change and the steps in implementing the new program. There would be a piloting stage with various assessment instruments being used to provide data concerning student’s reaction to the new curriculum. Needs assessment data would be collected from teachers, students, staff, and community members. Assessment instruments would be used to monitor the program when it is implemented.

I feel that the Organizational Development Model is most consistent with my way of thinking. I feel that collaboration is at the heart of successful curriculum implementation with those who are implementing the change serving as facilitators. In our rapidly changing world we need to constantly reevaluate the needs of teachers and students. I feel that teams and the group process best encourage the implementation of curriculum for all students.
