2. Explain what was included in the Adams-On?s Treaty. (Ch. 7-1)

The Adams-Onis Treaty solved the border issues between Spain and the USA. In 1819 Spain ceded Florida to the USA and both agreed the border between Texas and Louisiana would be the Sabine River 3. What is a filibuster? Who were the main filibusters in Texas? (Ch. 7-1 & Ch. 7-2)

An individual who carries out unauthorized warfare against another country...The main filibusters were Philip Nolan, Bernardo Gutierrez de Lara, Jean Lafitte, and James Long. 4. 5. What goal did Bernardo Gutierrez de Lara have for the Gutierrez-Magee expedition? (Ch. 7-2) The goal of the Gutierrez Magee expedition was to march on Spanish territory, fight the military and free Texas from Spanish rule.

6. What was the result of the Battle of Medina? (Ch.7-2) Even after defeat, the rebels made plans to free Texas from Spanish rule.

7. What is the significance of the year 1821?(Ch7-3)

Spanish rule in Texas ended. Mexico is now and independent country.

8. What were the lasting effects of Spanish rule on Texas? (Ch. 7-3) The Spanish legacy is deeply rooted in Texan culture, traditions and people. Language, names, cowboy traditions, places, food, and architecture can be seen throughout Texas.

9. What is an empresario? (Ch. 8-1)

The Spanish word for a land agent whose job it is to bring new settlers to an area.

10.How did Stephen F. Austin show good leadership skills as an empresario? (Ch. 8-1) He showed good leadership by surveying the land, dividing the land into plots, advertising to attract settlers, applying for land titles, choosing hard working settlers, and providing transportation for the settlers.

11.What did Stephen F. Austin create in order to defend colonists against Native American raids? (Ch. 8-1) He created a militia, a group of citizens acting as a military force.

12.What did colonists applying for land grants in Texas under Spanish rule have to agree to do? (Ch.8-1 & Ch 8-2)

They had to agree to become Catholic, become citizens of Mexico, and display good conduct. 13.What problems did Green Dewitt's colony have which led to its failure? (Ch.8-2)

There were few families willing to settle in his colony, Mexico passed laws that limited immigration, he failed to build schools or churches, and he did not fulfill his contract of 400 families.

14.What made Martin De Leon's colony unique in Texas? (Ch. 8-2)

It was the only colony made up of mainly Mexican families. 15.What did the Mexican government hope to gain from the State Colonization Law of 1825?

16.Why did settlers want to move to Texas? Where did they come from? (Ch.8-3)

They came for cheap land, escaping debts or the law, and adventure. Most settlers came from the southern United States.

17.Describe slavery in Texas? (Ch. 8-3)

Southern farmers brought enslaved African Americans with them to Texas using them as a labor source. The Imperial colonization law outlawed the buying and selling of people, but did not prevent colonists from holding slaves. In 1829 slavery was outlawed in Mexico, but it was not enforced in Texas.
