Attempting to set up Windows Hello using new BlasterX Senz3D webcam. Here’s the Windows Hello screen – it hasn’t been set up yet.Clicking “Set up” raises an introductory screen, then prompts for security validation before proceeding.Windows Hello then displays the webcam view, prompting to make sure you’re in the picture. Notice, however, that there is no picture – the screen is black. That’s because Windows Hello is using the built-in webcam on my Surface Book laptop (even though its lid is closed) and not the BlasterX Senz3D webcam. In the picture below I’ve lifted the lid of the laptop slightly – you can see part of the trackpad. The webcam IS turned on…just the wrong webcam!Continues on next page…There are two problems.Windows Hello doesn’t seem to provide the ability to choose a specific webcam. There MUST be a provision to use a secondary webcam when a laptop window is closed.I use a Microsoft Surface Book laptop, which has a built-in Windows Hello-enabled webcam. However, much of the time I use dual external monitors connected to a Microsoft Surface Dock. In this case the laptop screen is closed and disabled in the Displays Control Panel. The built-in webcam is useless in this configuration, so I need to be able to specify my external webcam in much the same way that I specify my external monitors. The whole point of Windows Hello is to provide a simple, hands-free way to login to the computer. So MANUALLY specifying the webcam to use every time I change from “laptop mode” to “desktop mode” doesn’t make sense. The laptop should know when its lid is closed and screen disabled (i.e., when it’s docked), and revert to the “external” configuration automatically. ................
