Event Host - Cally Latchford: It will also be available in your event archives on along with the recording & chat transcript!

DEIRDRE GREER [Columbus, GA]: Thanks!

RAY DART [Peterborough, ON]: I think we are BEYOND centralized. Departments here have almost no discretionary budget.

John Milligan [Valley Glen, CA]: We are pretty much the same at my institution.

LINDA MARTIN [Laramie, WY]: Personnel here is controlled by the Upper Administration -- if an opening exists, they take the position (both faculty and staff) at the end of the year. Then we have to fight to get it back; no moving around.

LINDA SPERRY [Terre Haute, IN]: That happens at our institution too.

John Milligan [Valley Glen, CA]: We are a community college with not much change in the budget allocation for faculty. Our budgets are determined by the VP of Administrative Affairs. They cut our spending budget by 66% in the last year without regard to prior expenditures. :(

SHELLEY LUND [Milwaukee, WI]: same here - departments only have control over the supplies and expenses budget

RAY DART [Peterborough, ON]: A question I have is how to convince a Dean to move more towards incentives.

CHARLIE RANDAZZO [Overland Park, KS]: Thank you...very good presentation!

MICHAEL SUKOWSKI [Chicago, IL]: Thank you both!

John Milligan [Valley Glen, CA]: Thanks to everyone.

LINDA MARTIN [Laramie, WY]: Thank you

LINDA SPERRY [Terre Haute, IN]: Thank you

SHELLEY LUND [Milwaukee, WI]: Thanks much - this series has been very helpful

Event Host - Cally Latchford:

Activity 1: Thought questions

A budget calamity hits your school and your dean tells you to develop a 20 percent reduction plan by July 1, 2012. What would you do?

John Milligan [Valley Glen, CA]: We have already done this on our campus. I asked for input from the rest of the department as to what we need to prioritize and got no input from the department.

CHARLIE RANDAZZO [Overland Park, KS]: Evaluate last 2 years budgets to look for potential items to cut for next year

DEIRDRE GREER [Columbus, GA]: Identify the most important areas that impact students, and begin identifying cuts from areas that do not impact student learning.

LINDA MARTIN [Laramie, WY]: Evaluate any non-personnel resources, then evaluate the curriculum (we are only one deep in many areas, so this is difficult; staff is already overloaded)

JOHN SCHUMACHER [Baltimore, MD]: We would likely need to cut the number of sections offered by adjunct faculty.

A budget windfall becomes available. Your dean tells you to spend $30,000 by June 30, 2012. What would you do?

John Milligan [Valley Glen, CA]: There is some equipment that we really could use for our classes and would burn through that 30k pretty fast.

DEIRDRE GREER [Columbus, GA]: Request input from faculty and priortize requests.

CHARLIE RANDAZZO [Overland Park, KS]: Good to have "wishlists" available if this potential situation occurs.

LINDA MARTIN [Laramie, WY]: This is the end of the biennium, we lose any extra money on June 30. We have a couple of open lines --so we are replacing equipment and furnishing that are very old. We have an equipment committee that prioritizes

JOHN SCHUMACHER [Baltimore, MD]: Consider creating research accounts for faculty that they can spend on their own research (but not on salary).

Activity 2: On your campus what is the predominant budget management style?

[pic]

Activity 3: Which budgeting model do you operate under?

[pic]

Activity 4: How much incentive do you have to make money, create new revenue streams, and save money in your budget?

[pic]

Activity 5: Do you think your budget percentages reflect both needs and department priorities?

[pic]

Activity 6: Workload Management

[pic]

When was your spring term class schedule last reviewed comprehensively?

LINDA MARTIN [Laramie, WY]: We are working on the entire curriculum (courses are only offered once yearly, except the rotations)

John Milligan [Valley Glen, CA]: We don't do a lot of change because we are almost bare bones offerinings.

LINDA SPERRY [Terre Haute, IN]: We have been forced by economic considerations to make those decisions in an ongoing manner.

CHARLIE RANDAZZO [Overland Park, KS]: Working on that right now...I am the new chair this year and it appears the curriculum has not been evaluated in some time.

JAMES HOPPER [Overland Park, KS]: We are currently working on our entire curriculum

JOHN SCHUMACHER [Baltimore, MD]: We're using the PeopleSoft system to do that now

SHELLEY LUND [Milwaukee, WI]: we are constantly reviewing and revising our curriculum

Activity 10: Resource Management

Can you move money from one non-personnel category to another without the dean's permission for every transfer?

RICHARD FORT [Overland Park, KS]: No

JAMES HOPPER [Overland Park, KS]: No

MICHAEL SUKOWSKI [Chicago, IL]: No

CHARLIE RANDAZZO [Overland Park, KS]: No

DEIRDRE GREER [Columbus, GA]: Yes

LINDA SPERRY [Terre Haute, IN]: Yes

John Milligan [Valley Glen, CA]: No, it goes through the budget officer.

LINDA MARTIN [Laramie, WY]: Yes, it is a block allocation

SHELLEY LUND [Milwaukee, WI]: I think so...

Can you move money from personnel to non-personnel department needs (example: from adjunct account to travel) without the dean's permission for every transfer?

SHELLEY LUND [Milwaukee, WI]: no

RICHARD FORT [Overland Park, KS]: No

MICHAEL SUKOWSKI [Chicago, IL]: No

JOHN SCHUMACHER [Baltimore, MD]: Yes, we have total control

John Milligan [Valley Glen, CA]: No.

JAMES HOPPER [Overland Park, KS]: No

CHARLIE RANDAZZO [Overland Park, KS]: No

LINDA SPERRY [Terre Haute, IN]: No

LINDA MARTIN [Laramie, WY]: Yes, until the end of the year
