Unstoppable Czechs win Hopman Cup

Petra Kvitova and Tomas Berdych won the Hyundai Hopman Cup title for Czech Republic after recording a 2-0 triumph over France in Saturday's final at the Burswood Dome in Perth.

Kvitova opened the tie with a 75 61 win against Marion Bartoli before Berdych sealed victory by defeating Richard Gasquet 76(0) 64. The two Czech players, ranked No. 2 and No. 7 in the world respectively, remained unbeaten in singles play throughout the tournament.

"It's really good to win at the beginning of the season and of course I have to say thank you to Tomas because without him we wouldn't win," said Kvitova.

Berdych added: "It couldn't be better, it was an extremely great week and first of all I need to congratulate my partner. She won all she can and I just add some winnings again and now we can be standing here and have such a nice trophy, so it was a really good week."

Czech Republic's only previous Hopman Cup success was in 1994 when Jana Novotna and Petr Korda teamed up to defeat Germany's Anke Huber and Bernd Karbacher in the final.

Countdown to the Australian Open

The 2012 Australian Open gets underway in just a week's time with the world's top players heading to Melbourne for the first Grand Slam of the year.

Novak Djokovic is bidding to win his third consecutive major following his terrific season in 2011, which saw him claim the titles at the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the US Open. Rafael Nadal will lead the challenge along with Roger Federer and Andy Murray.

Kim Clijsters lifted the women's trophy in 2011, her first Australian Open victory and fourth Grand Slam title, but she missed most of the 2011 season with a torn stomach muscle. World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki will head the women's charge but will face stiff opposition from Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova and US Open champion and home favourite Sam Stosur.

Ashleigh Barty (AUS), Casey Dellacqua (AUS), Madison Keys (USA), Aravane Rezai (FRA), Olivia Rogowska (AUS) have already been announced as the women's wild cards. Men's wild cards so far announced are Jeremy Chardy (FRA), James Duckworth (AUS), Lleyton Hewitt (AUS), Jesse Levine (USA), Marinko Matosevic (AUS) and Ben Mitchell (AUS).

Qualifying is being held this week with the main draw taking place from 16-29 January. For more information visit .

NEWS IN BRIEF

Spain wins 2011 European Tennis Trophy

Spain's Davis Cup by BNP Paribas victory in December secured the nation its fifth European Tennis Trophy for Overall Tennis Performance, Tennis Europe announced on Monday.

The Trophy recognises and rewards the annual achievements of Tennis Europe's 49 member nations, providing a year-end ranking of the performances of players and teams across the main competitive disciplines.

Spain won the Professional Tennis category, finished fifth in Junior Tennis, eighth in Seniors Tennis and fourth in Wheelchair Tennis to take the overall crown.

Other nations to be honoured are: Russia (Junior Tennis Trophy), Germany (Senior Tennis Trophy) and Netherlands (Wheelchair Tennis Trophy).

"A European Tennis Trophy victory represents not just the achievements of the players, but also the performances of coaches, administrators and federation staff," said Tennis Europe President Jacques Dupre.

The prizes will be awarded at a special ceremony during Tennis Europe's Annual General Meeting in Lyon in March.
