The college district promotes equity in academic access through the implementation of reasonable accommodations as required by the Vocational Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Title V, Section 504 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) which will enable students with disabilities to participate in and benefit from all post-secondary educational programs and activities. If you require reasonable accommodations because of a physical, mental, or learning disability, please notify the instructor of this course within the first 2 weeks of the term.

PURPOSE

Study of the biophysical principles, assessment, and application of therapeutic physical agents with specific emphasis on indications, contraindications, medical efficacy, and physiological effects.

COURSE OUTCOMES

WECM Learning Outcomes:

-The student will safely and effectively select and apply physical agents.

-Utilize appropriate assessment techniques to monitor response to treatment.

-Discuss biophysical principles as they relate to the application of physical agents

Montgomery College Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this course, student PTA’s will be able to:

1) The student will safely and effectively select and apply physical agents.

2) Utilize appropriate assessment techniques to monitor response to treatment.

3) Discuss biophysical principles as they relate to the application of physical agents

4) Discuss and explain underlying pathology in patient problems as it relates to the use of physical agents including: inflammation and tissue repair, pain, tone abnormalities, and motion restrictions.

5) Demonstrate understanding and proficiency of the following criteria for the list of physical agents listed below:

a) Explain the principles involved in the safe application of the physical agent, including the rationale for treatment and the physiological effect.

b) Discuss the appropriate indications for the use of the physical agent.

c) Discuss all applicable contraindications for the use of the physical agent.

d) Demonstrate the proper application including frequency, duration, intensity, progression, and any necessary modifications that may be required

Physical agents to be discussed:

• Thermal agents: cold and heat (hot packs, cold packs and paraffin)

• Electrical currents: (ESTIM, TENS, NMES, High Voltage Galvanic Stimulation, EMG, iontophoresis )

• Hydrotherapy

• Ultrasound

• Phonophoresis

• Mechanical Spinal Traction

• Continuous Passive Motion (CPM)

• Intermittent Compression Pump

• Tilt Table

• Electromagnetic radiation

• Soft tissue massage

6) Explore directions for future research and application of physical agents

• Practical exams. Students must demonstrate competency in these techniques through a check-off procedure in addition to the successful completion of practical examinations. Students must successfully complete all of the check-offs before they will be allowed to take the practical exam.

• Presentation. All students will complete a presentation on an assigned physical agent. The student will present in an “inservice” format and include recent research information on the physical agent and a handout.

• Professionalism. Students will be expected to assist with the Healthier U activities and/or attend one TPTA meeting.
