The NYC Dept. of Education determines eligibility; cards are valid for one semester. Spirit Day Thursday, October 13Students and teachers travel to Bear Mountain for a day designed to promote school spirit. Organized by the G.O. Must turn in permission slip.Grades 7/8 Travel Class Parties Sunday, October 16 (suggested date) Each Travel Class enjoys a potluck event, at a home or outside venue, allowing families to get to know each other. Grades 7/8 School DancesFriday, October 28; Friday, March 10Dances are held from 3:30-6 pm, with a modest admission fee. Fall Cultural BanquetSaturday, November 12Coordinated this year by the Chinese American Parents’ Association (CAPA), this event is an annual highlight.Parent-Teacher Conferences Monday, November 21, and Tuesday, November 22; Monday, March 20.Five-minute appointments with teachers are made several days in advance by students, on a first-come first-served basis (scheduling sheets will be emailed home). Carnival for Students Tuesday, June 13After a half-day of classes, student clubs sponsor activity booths during this courtyard fundraiser for the G.O. Highlights are the dunking booth, jousting and the unveiling of the mascot for the rising Senior class. End-of-School-Year ScheduleThe last day of classes is Thursday, June 15. Final Exams are held through Friday, June 23, though some students may finish sooner. School Policies and Services Attendance | You do not have to call in absences, but notes from parents must be submitted to the HS Main Office within one week. See the The Umbrella handbook for the complete policy. School Day | Student schedules vary each day. During free periods, students may study in the library, eat in the cafeteria or lounge, chat quietly in the hallways or leave campus. Cafeteria | Free breakfast is served for all students at 7:30 am, with a Grab-N-Go option. Lunch is available for purchase starting at 10:30 am for $1.50. Some students may qualify for free or reduced-cost lunch and should contact the HS Main Office for an application. Community Service | Students must complete 75 hours of community service by the end of Junior year and cannot graduate without them. All projects must be pre-approved by the Community Service Coordinator. The Community Service Office in Rm. 236 maintains a list of opportunities; many can also be found on the HCHS school website.Counseling Services | Guidance counselors assist students with academic and personal matters. Ms. Lee Weinberg is assigned to the Class of 2022 and will remain with the students for two years. At the start of 9th grade, each student is assigned a new counselor who remains with him/her through Senior year and the college process. Early Excused DismissalStudents who need to leave school early, must submit a parental note to the Main Office and receive an early dismissal slip, to be shown to teachers before departing. Emergency Response Procedures | In the event of a citywide or school emergency, go to the HCHS website for up-to-the-minute info, or listen to a radio station such as WCBS (880 AM) or WINS (1010 AM). If a safety emergency is declared, students must remain in the building. If evacuation is necessary, the students will be moved to the 92nd Street Y at Lexington Ave. and 92nd. Please keep your child’s Emergency Contact Card, filed in the Main Office, up to date.Family Emergency | To reach a student due to an extreme emergency, call the Main Office at 212-860-1267 and every effort will be made to locate your child. Half Days | About once a month, students attend school for the morning only; faculty use the afternoon for professional development and meetings. The Calendars show which class periods will meet. Illness/School Nurse | In case of sudden illness, your child will be sent to our full-time registered nurse and will be dismissed early only if you pick him/her up or have him/her sent home or to your workplace by taxi.Lost and Found | Lost items are held at the Public Safety desk. Unclaimed items are periodically donated to local charities. One Subject Reports | One Subject Reports will alert you if your child is in danger of failing a course or about other aspects of your child’s performance of concern. Public Safety | Full-time Public Safety officers oversee the building, playground and perimeter sidewalks. Entrances, corridors and stairwells are monitored electronically. Contact: (212) 860-1264.Report Cards | Report cards are emailed home each quarter. It is the family’s responsibility to keep the email address of record up to date in the Online Directory. 1st and 3rd quarter grades (Nov. and Apr.) are unofficial running grades, while 2nd and 4th quarter grades (Jan. and June) are official semester grades. Year grades are also given. Safety Patrol | Grade 7 and 8 parents are assigned to patrol the neighborhood each day. The year-long schedule will be available soon; you are responsible for arranging schedule swaps. School Cancellation | Hunter follows the NYC Dept. of Education weather-related closings. Check the HCHS website or local news. The Umbrella | The HCHS Handbook contains vital school info; every parent and student should read it each year to understand school procedures and changes. It is mailed home each summer and is available online at the HCHS website. Each child and guardian must sign the Emergency Contact Form mailed with The Umbrella, which indicates acceptance of the policies in the handbook.Working Papers | Working Papers are available for eligible students at any time.
