The most effective way to accommodate for students with learning disabilities is to follow the accommodations established in the ARD meeting. It is important to remember that the accommodations listed in a student’s ARD paperwork are mandatory and legally binding. However, this does not mean that teachers can only do the accommodations specified – teachers are allowed and are encouraged to provide accommodations that they deem will benefit the student.

The term “learning disabilities”, sometimes referred to as specific learning disabilities, is an umbrella term that covers a range of neurologically based disorders in learning and various degrees of severity of such disorders.
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) provides that “specific learning disability” means "a disorder in 1 or more of the basic psychological processes involved in understanding or in using language, spoken or written, which disorder may manifest itself in the imperfect ability to listen, think, speak, read, write, spell, or do mathematical calculations.”

NATIONALLY: SPECIFIC LEARNING DISABILITIES ARE CONSIDERED A HIGH-INCIDENCE DISABILITY. IN THE 2009-2010 SCHOOL YEAR, THERE WERE OVER 2.43 MILLION STUDENTS BEING SERVED FOR SPECIFIC LEARNING DISABILITIES. THIS NUMBER OF STUDENTS WAS APPROXIMATELY 37.5% OF ALL CHILDREN RECEIVING SPECIAL EDUCATION SERVICES AND 4.9% OF THE TOTAL STUDENT BODY.
Texas: During the 2009-2010 school year, the specific learning disability population comprised 42.11% of the special education population and 3.85% of the total student body.
Sunnyvale: Currently, the Sunnyvale ISD special education department serves 107 students, 19.62% are diagnosed with learning disabilities.

EVERY INDIVIDUAL WITH A LEARNING DISABILITY IS UNIQUE AND SHOWS A DIFFERENT COMBINATION AND DEGREE OF DIFFICULTIES. A COMMON CHARACTERISTIC AMONG PEOPLE WITH LEARNING DISABILITIES IS UNEVEN AREAS OF ABILITY, “A WEAKNESS WITHIN A SEA OF STRENGTHS.” FOR INSTANCE, A CHILD WHO STRUGGLES WITH READING, WRITING AND SPELLING MAY BE VERY CAPABLE IN MATH AND SCIENCE.
Learning disabilities should not be confused with learning problems which are primarily the result of visual, hearing, or motor handicaps; of mental retardation; of emotional disturbance; or of environmental, cultural or economic disadvantages.
Generally speaking, people with learning disabilities are of average or above average intelligence. There often appears to be a gap between the individual’s potential and actual achievement. This is why learning disabilities are referred to as “hidden disabilities:” the person looks perfectly “normal” and seems to be a very bright and intelligent person, yet may be unable to demonstrate the skill level expected from someone of a similar age.
Specific Learning Disabilities
• During the late 1980s and 1990s, the number of school-age children receiving services as a child with a learning disability escalated rapidly. However, during the last decade, that number has actually declined by 14%.
• Almost 2/3 of students with a learning disability are male.
• In 2008, 62% of students with a learning disability spent 80% or more of their time in the general education classroom compared to 40% in 2000.
• More students with learning disabilities are graduating with a regular high school diploma at a rate of 64% in 2008 compared to 52% a decade earlier.
• Learning disabilities arise from neurological differences in brain structure and function and affect the brain’s ability to store, process or communicate information.
• While it is unclear what causes neurological disorders that lead to learning disabilities, heredity is considered a major factor because learning disabilities seem to occur within members of the same family.

Twiddley Bird
Little Sunshine was a small twiddley bird.
Soaring over clouds like a kite she did.
Singing the spring like a choir of silver bells.
Little sunshine was truly talented,
and truly amazing.
A shadow of sorrow covered her,
for no one looked at how she could shine.
But one person did look.
Helped her see her might.
Little Sunshine will always remember
the one who flew with her.
Through the gray skies,
helping her find the way.
So she sang her song to her friend,
as little Sunshine flew out of sight.
