For 1st grade, I will be using a book from Brighter Child Spanish 1, RockaLingua website that contains different learning topics, vocabulary and common verbs used in Spanish. Students will be reviewing similar topics from Kindergarten but will work on deeper use of Spanish vocabulary. Students will learn how to make connections between English and Spanish words. Most units contain interactive videos in Spanish, reading bilingual stories, songs, and working sheets. In the syllabus you can find what our year will look like. I have designed the syllabus in a way that each month will review a new topic or re-study a topic from Kindergarten. CKS has adopted a Foreign Language grade level standard for K – 8th grade. During Spanish class students will be grade in their level of participation, communication, making connection (between English and Spanish basic concepts), and cultures (knowledge and understanding of other cultures or cultural events such as “Día de los Muertos”, “Navidad/ las posadas” and other cultural events throughout the school year). As a parent is important that you help your child in the learning process of a new language at home. I will provide different links, interactive websites in Spanish that contains songs and stories that you can play at home. Lesson plan – 1st gradeFirst week of class, students will be introduced to regular classroom rules during Spanish class, basic vocabulary in Spanish such as asking for bathroom break.September Greetings / Los saludos – Como te llamas? And setting clasroom rules. In this unit students will enhance their basic greeting vocabulary with our new unit called “como te llamas”. This unit includes interactive songs, vocabulary and grammar comprehension. The song will be play at the beginning of each class. Students will work on working sheets for this unit.OctoberVowels and ABC /Las vocales y el abecedario Students will learn vowels in Spanish and their sounds. Students will work on working sheets for grammar, listening and vocabulary workbook. The main purpose of this unit is to introduce students to the sound of letter in Spanish and recognizing words that starts with each Spanish vowel. November Days of the week and month of the year/ días de la semana y los meses del a?o. During this month students will be introducing to the cultural aspect of “Day of death/ “El dia de los Muertos” (cultural understanding). Students will learn days of the week and months of the year. This unit contains a song, grammar work in had outs, and reading comprehension. *Students will work on special project for our cultural event “Dia de los Muertos”. December Christmas/ La Navidad en Latino América (Cultural understanding) This unit is related to the Holidays. Students will learn vocabulary words use during Christmas time in Spanish. Students will be introduced to the meaning of a traditional events in Mexico called “las posadas” and “Navidad” in Latin America countries. Students will watch a video about how people celebrate Christmas in other countries. Students will listen to the story about “las posadas” and prepare an act of Las Posadas during school time by going classroom to classroom asking for a Posada. JanuaryNumbers 0-20, shapes, and colors/ Los números de 0-20, figuras geométricas y los coloresStudents in this unit will learn basic math concepts in Spanish by reviewing numbers 0-10 and learning new set of numbers in Spanish 10-20, shapes and colors. Students will take home their working sheet and will learn songs in relation of the tree concepts learned during class. FebruaryClassroom Objects/ los objetos de la clase. Students will review the name of basic classroom objects and will learn new vocabulary in this unit from RockaLingua. Students will learn a song related to classroom objects and will work on working sheets to help develop new grammatical concepts. Students will play Bingo using words learned in this unit. *Students may work on Valentines “día del amor y de la amistad” activity in Spanish during this month. March Farm animals / Los animales de la granjaFor this unit students will review farm animals learned in Kindergarten. Students will work on a new unit call “La granja” from RockaLingua source. This unit will review more extensive vocabulary for farm animal and objects. Students will watch a video about farm animals and the important job each animal has in the farm. April Verbs/ Los verbos (Las frutas handout)Students will review fruits and will learn how say “I like it” “I don’t like it” in Spanish/ “me gusta” “no me gusta”. Students will learn basic conjugation of verb “gustar” with this unit. May Body parts / partes del cuerpo humano Students will be introduced to basic body parts names in Spanish through a song. Students will be able to compare concepts in English and Spanish through the song “head, shoulder, knee and toe”/ “cabeza, hombros, rodillas, pies”. Students will work on a handout from Rockalingual. Students will learn new body parts. JuneReview – Story telling.During this month students will review all the vocabulary learn throughout the year. Students will have a Classroom party as end of school year (special guess may come to tell stories in Spanish to children for K – 1st grade).
