Assistant Professor of Education (Tenure Track) in Curriculum and Instruction (Elementary Education) - Department of Curriculum, Instruction and Special Education (CISE); School of Education & Human DevelopmentThe School of Education and Human Development at the University of Virginia seeks an innovative scholar for the position of Assistant Professor of Education, in the Department of Curriculum, Instruction, and Special Education (CISE) in the area of preK-6 Elementary Teacher Education. This this is a 9-month, salaried, tenure-eligible faculty position.The successful candidate is expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in elementary teacher education that could include: social studies methods; issues in preK-6 education; a capstone focusing on diversity, equity & social justice in education .? This position also advises students in the teacher education program as well as collaborates to build a cutting-edge online course focused on a topic particularly relevant for educators (race, equity & diversity in education). The successful candidate will work collaboratively with colleagues, both within and outside the School of Education and Human Development with an emphasis on working with preK-6 partners.The successful candidate is expected to design and conduct rigorous research, working with interdisciplinary faculty across the school and the University, and to be successful in seeking extramural research funding. Preference will be given to individuals whose research concentrates on race and schooling, culturally responsive curriculum development, and other topics relevant to social studies education.Required Qualifications and Experience: Ed.D. or Ph.D. in social studies education, educational psychology, curriculum and instruction, early childhood or elementary teacher education, urban education, critical/cultural studies in education, or a related field prior to the start date of the position;Experience teaching at the university level;Classroom teaching experience in preK-6 education;Knowledge about the education of diverse young learners in a preK-6 setting, knowledge of teaching and learning in preK-6;Ability to train educators to be successful in the preK-6 setting, and experience teaching with culturally relevant/responsive/sustaining pedagogy grounded in principles of equity;A record of scholarship that demonstrates the ability to make strong links between theory and one’s own research agenda to practice in young children/students in preK-6, teachers, and/or policy makers;Evidence of scholarship that has potential to obtain extramural funding;Experience working with culturally and/or linguistically diverse students.Preferred Qualifications and Experience: Experience with developing collaborations;Experience developing curricula;Demonstrated ability to use technology in innovative ways to enhance instruction;Experience working in teacher education;Experience with online teaching;Licensure as a preK-6 elementary teacher is preferred.Applications:Review of applications will begin November 30, 2020 and will continue until the position is filled.Applicants should submit (preferably merged as one document):A current curriculum vitaCover LetterStatement of teaching philosophyAn academic writing sampleContact information for three professional referencesSubmission of up to five additional documents (e.g., prior course evaluations, syllabi, examples of teaching materials)Please apply through Workday, complete an application, combine/merge all materials into one PDF and submit in the resume field.
