Third Committee: Human Trafficking of Women and GirlsTrafficking of persons is a gender specific issue as men and women are trafficked for different reasons. Trafficking of persons is a violation of human rights and a form of violence against women and children. The Mesa Community College Sonoran Desert Model United Nations Conference will focus the discussion on violence against women and children. The United Nations has recognized the impact of human trafficking especially with women and children since its inception, even using institutions created by the League of Nations. However, the most influential and impactful work has taken place in the last 30 years. Implemented in 1990, the Convention on the Rights of the Child explicitly identifies the prevention of sale and trafficking of children. In 2000 the United Nations General Assembly passed resolution 55/25 which included the Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children. These two leading conventions enter their 30th and 20th anniversaries and are under scrutiny by the agencies that oversee their implementation. The documents are available in the links below.
