DESERT HILLS HIGH SCHOOL GUIDELINES FOR TEAM TRY-OUTS

1. A student may not participate in interscholastic sports if the student is 19 years of age before September 1st. This is an AIA and AZCAA state rule.

2. Team members will be selected on the basis of the coach’s evaluation of a candidate’s skill level, academic status and attitude.

3. Candidacy for team membership will be based on a minimum of a two day practice try-out evaluation and academic status. The coach may increase the days if desired.

4. Candidates will be informed of what is expected of them in terms of skills, grades and attitude in a pre-season meeting, set by the coach.

5. Candidates will be notified if they make the team after tryouts by an individual notification either by letter or discussion by coach..

6. Candidates must understand that the expenses incurred for shoes, physical examinations or other such necessities, does not guarantee team membership.

7. A student who is not eligible to try out for a team when official tryouts are held (due to grades, injury or other situation) may tryout for the team when he/she becomes eligible, if the coach, in consultation with the athletic director, permits a tryout at that time and is before the roster deadline required by the league..

8. ATHLETE’S PARENTS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE IN ANY ASPECT OF PRE-SEASON TRYOUTS.

DESERT HILLS HIGH SCHOOL ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS TO PARTICIPATE IN SPORTS

The academic policy applies to all students who choose to participate in Desert Hills High School Sports.

1. Snapgrades will be checked before tryouts.

2. A student is not allowed to tryout with a failing grade.

3. When and/or if a student brings up his or her grade before the end of try-outs, a student may tryout.

4. A student may try out after the conclusion of tryouts if coach and athletic director agree and if a student brings up his or her grade to passing.

5. A student's grades will be checked once a week, usually on Friday, on Snapgrades. An “F” at that time will result in game suspension till the grade is passing. It is also at the discretion of the coach to suspend a player from practice.

6. A student has two weeks from the first Friday after grade checks to bring grades to passing. If the student is still failing after the grace period, the student will be removed from the team.

7. An “F” on a final report card is an immediately removal from the team. Also, a student’s teacher may contact the coach or Athletic Director if he/she is failing anytime during the block. This too can render an athlete academically ineligible.

DESERT HILLS HIGH SCHOOL PARENT PROTOCAL

Should a parent have a concern regarding his/her student athlete, a set protocol should be followed in hope of resolving the concern/issue. It should be noted that the selection of students to be a member on a school team is the prerogative of Desert Hills High School, mainly the head coach. Furthermore, it is also at the discretion of the coach to the amount of game time a player sees.

This protocol assumes the student athlete has already talked to the coach.

Concerns/issues should be handled in the following protocol:

• Contact the head coach

• If not satisfied, contact the school athletic director

• If not satisfied, contact the principal

DESERT HILLS HIGH SCHOOL PARENT CODE OF CONDUCT

If other arrangements are made concerning transportation, the head coach must be notified in advance by a parent and is under no obligation to allow alternate transportation.

DESERT HILLS HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT ATHLETE CODE OF CONDUCT

A student’s eligibility for participation in school sports may be affected by the student’s conduct. The athletic director and/or the principal make the final determination whether a student is dismissed from a team for inappropriate conduct.

1. Conduct by the student during competition is to represent Desert Hills High School in the best light.

2. A referral by itself may not be sufficient cause to suspend a student’s participation in sports, however, depending on the nature of the infraction the coach is expected to take appropriate action once they are advised of the incident.

3. If a student has established a pattern of misconduct, regardless of whether or not a suspension was involved, the student is subject to being dismissed by the coach, athletic director or principal from all teams of which the student is a member.

4. Any out-of-school suspension results in an automatic suspension from all teams the student is a member for the duration of the suspension. Not only is the student suspended from playing, the student is also suspended from practices and attending games as a spectator. It is at the discretion of the principal to remove the player from the team for the remainder of the season.

5. In-school suspension discipline is at the discretion of the principal.

6. A student athlete that is not in school for all three classes (excused or unexcused) the day of a game is not allowed to participate that day.

7. Lack of practice participation can result in reduced game time. This is at the discretion of the head coach.

8. Athletes are to refrain from interaction with fans during the game, including halftime.

9. Behavior at all venues, home or away, must be becoming of a Desert Hills High School student/athlete.

10. Conduct by the student after school hours which reflects negatively on the school can have a bearing on the student’s ability to participate in sports. Any after school incident that involves areas such as cigarettes, drugs, alcohol, theft, assault, gang activity, etc., brought to the attention of the school (coach, athletic director, principal, assistant principal or staff) may be result in discipline action and/or dismissal from the team.

11. It is the athlete’s responsibility to communicate with parents and/or guardian to the required pick up and drop off times for transportation to games.

12. The athlete is responsible for informing parent/guardian of game schedule. Furthermore, any information that pertains to the team that is brought up at team meeting needs to be communicated to parents or guardian by the athlete.

NCAA ELIGIBILITY CENTER

IF YOU ARE A JUNIOR, REGISTER NOW!!

BE YOUR BIGGEST FAN!

Prepare, prepare and prepare! Always practice like it is your last game and always play like a college recruiter is watching.

Make a portfolio:

1. Keep your own stats - don't expect anyone to keep them for you.

2. Have someone video tape a few of your games. Keep the footage available for colleges.

3. Search colleges - make sure you like the college as much as you like the sports - It is called the "Broken Leg Test - If you broke your leg and you couldn't play your sport, would you still like the college?

4. You don't have to play at a big high school to get to play college ball. Contact a college coach and invite him/her to watch your game.

Remind your college-bound student-athletes that they need to apply to the college or university they are interested in attending. Some student-athletes think that because they are being recruited or because they have registered with the Eligibility Center, they do not need to apply for admission. Continue to remind your college-bound student-athletes and their parents that athletics eligibility and admission to a college or university are two separate processes and that both need to be completed.

Now is the time for college-bound student-athletes in your junior class to register with the NCAA Eligibility Center if they pan on participating in college athletics. Early registration promotes positive planning and involvement, bypasses the last-minute rush and helps college-bound student-athletes avoid issues that may delay their academic and amateur certifications. The registration process is easy and can be done by:

1. Logging on the Eligibility Center's new website at ;

2. Selecting the "Fall 2010 or After" icon;

3. Selecting the "New Account" tab at the top of the screen; and

4. Beginning the registration process.

If you have any questions, the Eligibility Center has a toll-free line exclusively for high school administrators. The phone number is 877-622-2321.
