Unique Wedding Traditions: Jumping the Broom, Blending of the Sands Ceremony & the Unity Candle

There are many wedding traditions that couples can choose to honor on their wedding day. In this issue of the newsletter, we would like to explore just a few of them. Jumping the broom for example is a ceremony in which the couple literally jumps over a broom during the wedding ceremony. The purpose of this ceremony is to “sweep” away the past and the unification of the couple’s families as well as honoring the couple’s ancestors. This tradition is widely practiced in the Southern United States and is popular in the African American community. It’s also been said that the practice was common among couples who live in remote, isolated locations because of the amount of time it sometimes took to find an officiant to perform the ceremony. If couples couldn’t wait to consummate the marriage, friends and family would sometimes leave brooms on their front porches so the couple could “jump the broom.” Another interesting wedding tradition is the ceremony known as the blending of the sands. This ceremony involves the mixing or “blending” of two sands of different colors. Like the jumping of the broom, the blending of the sands is meant to symbolize the unification of the couple’s families and the beginning of their shared lives together. If you want to do something similar to the blending of the sands, a unity candle ceremony is another great option. The unity candle ceremony typically follows the exchange of rings. The mother of the bride lights three white candles (one large one in the center and two slender candles or tapers on each side. The outer candles represent the lives of the couple as individuals and the center candle represents the couple’s shared life together after marriage. The bride and groom each blow out their partner’s candle. The unity candle ceremony is a popular and beautiful option to include regardless of whether on not the ceremony is religious. Whether you choose to use brooms, candles or sand unity is the common thread among these wedding traditions.

Our Event of the Month: 65th Black, Gold & Ivory Themed Birthday Party

In each issue of our monthly newsletter, we like to showcase a different event that the staff of Rose, a Special Event Company has planned and executed. This lets our readers see all the hard work and dedication that we put into each and every event. Our Event of the Month for October is the 65th Black, Gold, & Ivory themed birthday party that our client Lauren asked us to throw for her mother. We talked to Lauren about her experience working with us. Here’s what she had to say:

Question: How did you find out about Rose, a Special Event Company?

Answer: I found out about the company through a website called Thumbtack. I use this website a lot when I’m trying to find good quality service providers.

Question: What made you choose the theme for your event?

Answer: It all started with an invitation I found on Etsy. It said ’65 And Fabulous’ and the color of the invitation was black and gold, so I just ran with that theme. My mom didn’t want a stuffy banquet hall chicken and mashed potatoes type of party, so I wanted to make it classy and sophisticated.

Question: Why did you choose Rose, A Special Event Company to plan your event?

Answer: I originally hired another event planner on Thumbtack and she randomly stopped communicating with me about a month before my event. So, I requested another quote through Thumbtack and Diane was the first to respond. Not only did she respond via e-mail, but she also called me to introduce herself. I knew within a couple minutes of speaking with her that I wanted to hire her. Not only was she extremely kind, but she also had a ton of event planning experience. I’m a very organized person, but I had no prior event planning experience, so having someone to walk me through the process and bounce ideas off of was invaluable.

Question: What are some of the things that Rose, a Special Event Company did to make your event special?

Answer: Diane really helped with the décor. I had a lot of ideas already and Diane helped make those ideas come to life. She gave me suggestions on where I could find the platters for my dessert table and recommended a phenomenal vendor for table runners, table skirting, and highboy sashes. Diane also let me use her glass cylinders and mirrors for my centerpieces.

Question: Were there any problems that arose during the planning process? If so how did Rose, a Special Event Company resolve them?

Answer: I originally planned to host the party near the back of the restaurant, but when my guest list quickly grew from 40 to 65 people, the restaurant’s Banquet Coordinator did me a favor and let me host the party in their downstairs banquet room. Since we were no working in a much larger space, my design ideas changed a bit and I decided I wanted to add menu cards at each place setting. The Banquet Coordinator gave me a really hard time with this idea because she didn’t want the servers to be “bothered” with adding plates to the tables. At this point, I was really frustrated but Diane encouraged me to stand my ground. And she gave me a lot of pep talk along the way. Ultimately, I ended up with an event that was exactly what I imagined.

Question: Would you recommend Rose, a Special Event Company to anyone who is planning an event? If so, why?

Answer: Yes, absolutely! Diane was great to work with. I’m extremely particular and Diane never tried to push her ideas on me. She listened, gave suggestions, and kept me grounded when I wanted to spend money on unnecessary decorations. In my opinion, this is exactly what you want from an event planner. When I get ready to plan my wedding, Diane will be the first person I call.

Hidden Wedding Costs:

Planning a wedding can be expensive and stressful. That’s why it’s a good idea to hire an experienced wedding or event planner like our Senior Event Planning Specialist Diane Lynn at Rose, A Special Event Company. An experience event planner like Diane can help you navigate the hidden costs of a wedding that you might not anticipate.

One of the biggest expenses that you might not expect when it comes to planning your wedding is wedding gown alterations. When you’re searching for the perfect wedding gown, keep the costs of alterations in mind. Another small expense that can really add up is postage. Between the save the date cards, reply cards, invitations, and thank you notes, you’ll be spending a lot on postage.

Vendor tips and meals are another cost that you should factor in. Your wedding or event planner can often assist you with this as well. Sales tax and service charges can also cost you a lot. And this is something else that a wedding or event planner can help you navigate.

The guests at your wedding, especially those from out of town will need a place to stay. So hotel suites are another expense that you need to consider. Booking rooms in advance can help you get the best deals. Hiring a wedding or event planner is the best way to stay on track and stick to your budget when it comes to planning your wedding.
