Adapted From Tribal Community Prevention sharing sacredteachings.htmlBy _______________________________________Student Book by Dalila Vroom The traditional concepts of respect and sharing are the foundation of Aboriginal life. They are built around seven natural laws or seven sacred teachings. Each teaching is meant to help people have a full and healthy life. Each law or teaching is embodied or alive by an animal. The animal world taught man how to live close to earth. Man is connected to the animal world. Man has a respect for all life in those who follow the traditional way.ElderTotem Pole Summary Notes__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Love must be unconditional. One’s first love is to be the Great Spirit. The Great Spirit is the father of all children and the giver of human life. Love given to the Great Spirit is expressed through love of oneself. The Eagle was chosen by the Great Spirit to represent this law. The Eagle can reach the highest of all of the animals. No animal was more important to the Aboriginal families than this animal. The Buffalo gave the people shelter, clothing and utensils for daily living. Aboriginal people believed themselves to be true caretakers of the great herds. Courage is confidence and bravery. The Bear is gentle by nature. The ferociousness of a mother Bear when one of her cubs is approached is the true definition of courage. People need to have mental and moral strength to overcome their fears. Fears prevent us from living our true spirit as human beings and are a great challenge that must be met with the same intensity as a mother Bear protecting her cub. Living of the heart and spirit is difficult. Bear shows us how to face any danger to achieve these goals.Bear = CourageDraw & colour your Bear below.Summary Notes___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Honesty is speaking and acting truthfully. Honesty is remaining morally upright.Long ago there was a giant called Kitch-Sabe. The Kitch-Sabe walked among the people to remind them to be honest to the laws and to each other. To say, “There walks an honest man. He can be trusted,” was the highest honour. To be truly honest was to keep the promises one made to the creator, to others and to oneself. Elders say,“Never try to be someone else.”“Live true to your spirit.”“Be honest to yourself.” “Accept who you are the way the Creator made you.” Sabe = HonestyDraw & colour your Sabe below.Summary Notes___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Wisdom is the ability to make decisions based on personal knowledge and experience. The building of a community is dependent on gifts given to each member by the Creator and how these gifts are used. The Beaver’s example of using his sharp teeth for cutting trees and branches to build his dams and lodges expresses this teaching. If the Beaver did not use his teeth they would continue to grow until they became useless. So the Beaver couldn’t survive. The same can be said for people. One spirit will become weak if it is not fulfilling its use. When everyone uses their gifts the community will be peaceful and healthy. Accepting that all beings are equal is to capture the spirit of humility. The Wolf became the teacher of this lesson: to express humility one must consider others before ourselves. The Wolf bows his head in the presence of others and will not take the food he hunted until it can be shared with the pack. The Wolf’s lack of arrogance and respect for his community is important to the Aboriginal way. On the back of a Turtle there are 13 moons. Each moon represents the truth of one cycle of Earth’s rotation around the sun. The 28 marking on her back represent the cycle of the moon as a woman’s body. The shell represents the body - real events and serves as a reminder of the Creator’s teachings.
