INTEREST SECTIONS CHAIR – Elissa James CALENDAR CHAIR – Susan Blake

-----------------------

Election Day, November 6, 2012, is only weeks away. There are many highly contested races on all levels of government so it is important that you learn as much about the candidates and ballot initiatives as you can before you vote. You should have received your sample ballot and Voter Guide with a list of the open positions and candidates in your area. It will also include local and state ballot measures. Some of these ballot measures can be very complicated.

As women we have the power to protect and advance women’s issues if we study the candidates’ positions and vote accordingly. The following are a few ways to evaluate the candidates:

• How did my incumbent Congressperson vote on women’s issues in the last session? Go to actionfund to see the Congressional Voting Record.

• How did my incumbent California Senator or Assembly Member vote? Find out at votingrecords.

• What are the candidates’ stated public positions on issues like jobs, college aid, health care, access to reproductive health services, keeping the safety net for the less fortunate? Check their web sites to find out.

California law allows voters to cast their ballot any time during the 29-day period preceding an election. You may begin early voting on October 9, 2012. The two Voting Centers are open during regular business hours (Mon. - Fri., 8:00 am - 5:00 pm) and two Saturdays, October 27 and November 3. They are located at 40 Tower Road in San Mateo, and 555 County Center, First Floor, Redwood City.

NOTES FROM SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS

“I have been very worried about paying for my education, but thanks to your support, I am one step closer to my dream….

Thank you again for your generosity. I will work hard to pay back to the community and make the AAUW proud of me.”

Emmeline Wong, a business administration major at UCBerkeley

“I am writing this letter to thank you for the good news that I was awarded. It is an honor to be chosen as a recipient of this award. Your support will keep me from worrying so much about the cost of tuition and university expenses, and it will make it possible for me to continue my education.”

Angine Marouty, an engineering student at SJSU

“You have no idea how much your scholarship will help me pay for school! Thank you so much for you and the organization's support in continuing my studies at the four-year university level. It means the world to me that AAUW wants to support me on my journey through college”

Lisa Torres, an engineering student at UCBerkeley

A TECH TREK THANK-YOU

First and foremost, I would like to thank you for sending me to Stanford, one of the most prestigious universities in the world. It has been a life-changing experience. During physics, we used imagination and creativity to innovate with everyday objects, like s’mores, ovens and nametags. I absolutely loved seeing professional women and talking to them about their jobs. The Star Party was also fun because I am really interested in astronomy. Learning and watching the stars, planets, galaxies and nebulas made me feel so small compared to them. Of course, every single second was great! Thank you again for sending me to Tech Trek on this opportunity of a lifetime.

Gratefully, Maggie Dong

TECH TREK

EK REPORT

I attended the Tech Trek annual Camp Directors' meeting the first Saturday in October. The state board has voted to make the branch scholarship fee $850.00 for the 2013 camps. This will really help us with cost of living increases and the escalating room and board at the university sites throughout California.

The volunteer directors remain focused and ready to showcase our great program to the National task force for developing Tech Trek in other states. Give yourselves a big round of applause for backing this camp with your enthusiasm and your contributions.

We have reserved 8 spaces at Camp Hopper (Stanford) for our girls from the 4 district middle schools. Your postcard donation reminder should reach you in the next 3 weeks. Please send your checks made out to AAUW CA SPF to: Maureen Buchner. If you make out the check as indicated, it is fully tax deductible. For $850.00, you could sponsor one young student for a week. A donation of $100.00 would support a student for one day at camp. If we all give a little bit more, we can make this a real life-changing experience for these future leaders.

Call Maureen Buchner if you have any questions about Tech Trek.

AAUW FUNDS/EF LUNCHEON

The AAUW Funds/EF Luncheon has been scheduled for Wednesday, April 24, 2013, at 11:00 am at the Crystal Springs Golf Club. This date was chosen because of member preference for weekday events and the additional cost of scheduling a luncheon on a weekend.

Of those members who responded to our recent survey, nearly two-thirds indicated they preferred meetings to be on a weekday. In an effort to be inclusive, the branch currently has scheduled seven out of eight general meetings on a Saturday or an evening. It is a difficult balancing act to try to accommodate everyone’s scheduling needs.

Although there has been a considerable amount of time spent looking for alternatives that do not add a fee for using their facility on a weekend, we have been unable to find any good alternatives. For example, the additional charge at Crystal Springs Golf Course for a weekend date next year would be $17.00 per person, bringing the cost of the program to $62.00 per person. We find that similar added charges for weekend use exist in other facilities that we would like to use.
