SPOTLIGHT ON GERMANY

Elsewhere in this issue you will find a number of new and some established German acts with international cross -over potential.

Germany's artists, producers and A&R experts have developed the quality of their recordings substantially over the last few years. It has resulted in a string of international hits, not only in Europe, but

really worldwide.

Singles and albums by acts like Trio, Alphaville, Nena, Peter Schilling set off this new 'German boom', but they are not the only ones. Lately artists like Jennifer Rush, and Modern Talking, have

also been breaking foreign

grounds. Whilst successes of records sung in German are continuing in the country itself, the international break -through of local acts have provided a steady income of foreign pressing fees and royalties to the German record

industry. EUROTIPSHEET will continue

to follow the progress of these acts. This issue will have a high circula-

tion in the German speaking coun-

tries and we welcome our new

readers. For those of you, who ha-

ven't heard the news yet, Eurotipsheet is now a joint -venture between European Music Report and Billboard.

BRITISH AWARDS FOR EUROPE

European audiences may have a chance to see next year's British

Record Industry Awards ceremony live on television, if a deal currently being negotiated between trade body the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) and U.S. distribution company The Entertainment Network (TEN) comes to fruition.

Ten plans to broadcast the awards show, which takes place

February 10, by satellite to Europe as it happens. The company also hopes to sell a package of edited highlights for syndication to American stations.

However, suggestions that the deal has already been concluded are premature, according to BPI headquarters in London where it's

said that the trade group hasn't even tied up its agreement with the BBC as yet, which broadcasts the

show. Nor is it true, insists BPI, that

the name of the awards event is to be changed to the International British Record Industry Awards to

give them wider appeal. That would be a contradiction

in terms, says the trade group,

although it does admit that it will be inviting more non -British artists to appear as guests, in an effort to increase the international flavour of the event, as well as tinkering with

the awards categories (comedy and soundtracks will be dropped

as separate sections) to tighten up the format of the show.

Many problems can arise from television company use on video of

performances by music artists, mainly through European or other exploitation or exposure, and through sale of the material to the

public. Now British Phonographic In-

dustry (BPI), the U.K. IFPI group, is

aiming to clarify and simplify the situation so that acts signed to its 131 member companies at least know precisely where they stand.

Patrick Isherwood, the group's legal adviser, is to prepare a form of standard contract or document setting out fair codes of practice.

by Peter Jones & Nick Robertshaw

What concerns the British record industry is the type of contract artists appearing on television are sometimes asked to sign. These, say BPI, often seem to re-

quire the artist to sign away rights he or she don't actually have.

Though these problems arise in most European territories, the BPI lead is planned to come up with a contract, a guideline for the music business, which clearly sets out what rights television companies may have and which rights in a television performance are reserved to the artist's record

company.

BELGIAN CO -PRODUCTION WITH MUSIC BOX

Music Box's new "Rox Box" series, which went out on the European music channel for the first time on

October 15, breaks new ground as the company's first co -production with a national broadcaster.

Recorded in English and French language versions, the show is being made with RTBF of

Belgium, using the station's Liege facilities and with Belgian star Ray Cokes as presenter. RTBF broadcasts the French version and Music Box transmits the English version.

The format includes video clips, interviews, live concert footage and studio bands, plus information and updates on the Belgian music scene. Says Julian Mounter, Music Box programming and ptoduction heaci: "It's taken a lot of work to get the show off the ground, but we believe the result is one of the most exciting music programmes available to the youn-

GERMAN POLYGRAM

CENTRALIZES LABELS

Polygram in West -Germany is reflecting a growing concentration of Pan -European talent/creative areas by centralizing the market-

ing, sales and distribution of its

three main labels, Phonogram, Deutsche Grammophon and Metronome, in a single operation which will be headed by Dieter Ohms, currently head of DG.

Also involved are budget label

Karusell and tv-merchandising arm Polystar, which will also affect

Antenna, the Polygram -funded production arm set up two years

ago, but which has not enjoyed much chart success.

Now Antenna will lose its production role and instead concentrate on music publishing, under Michael Kramer, with Intersong/Chappell in line to handle administration.

But the change is basically planned to leave the three main labels to focus on a&r, promotion and other creative areas. Heino

Wirth, former Metronome managing director, takes over Ohm's former DG job, with Klaus Ebert, previ-

ously head of Antenna, replacing Wirth. Louis Spillman stays on as head of Phonogram in

West -Germany.

George Hildebrand, long-time managing director of Chappell Musikverlage, takes control of the

Polydor label within DG, and Ray Schmidt -Walk heads a special repertoire division looking after the growing market for Austrian product in West -Germany.

But, says Richard Busch, the move reflects positive growth within the record industry in Germany, not a way to counter decline.

Positive developments, he says,

ger audience, and one which show our increasingly popular style to wider audience."

The "Rox Box" launch comes just as Music Box claims to have passed the landmark of three million homes, giving it a potential maximum audience of almost 10 million viewers in eleven European countries. The station's aim of becoming truly European -based is also on its way to fulfilment, with the Dutch -made "Time Out For Holland" and "Europarade" also on air and new co -productions from France and Scandinavia in

preparation. Says Mounter: "We have al-

ready shown the pilots of the French program 'From Paris With Love.' Our research suggests it should be attractive to an audience who don't see much of French musical talent. We hope to make the first pilot of the Scandinavian show

later this year."

are pre-recorded music on the upturn for the first time in years, Compact Disc software demand way ahead of supply, maxi -singles consistently rising, plus a growing popularity in classical music.

Maximising impact in an emer-

gent Pan -European atmosphere is the aim, and no redundancies are

expected as the changes go

through early next year.

TRILLION PICTURES

Trillion Pictures in London is well on

the way to completing its fourth series of "Live From London" rock

shows. The concerts, filmed at various

locations in the city, including Camden Palace, the Dominion and Hammersmith Odeon, include such acts as Judie Tzuke, UFO, Wendy 0. Williams, Warlock, Tokyo Blade and The Sinatras. Additionally, a Kid Creole and The Coconuts special "The Leisure Tour" was filmed at the Zenith in Paris and is currently in the post production stage.

This series features UK new ta-

lent primarily, the best coming through on the scene, but also involves American and European

acts. All the series have been sold

round the world and alongside "Live From London" Trillion now plans specials featuring major in-

ternational rock bands.

EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT: VIDEO WINDOW

The European Parliament in Strasbourg has voted in favour of a le-

gally binding "window" between cinema, television and home video

exploitation of feature films. This decision is as yet only ad-

visory but could well end up being written into future EEC legislation, and that would mean that no movie could be released on video until af-

ter it had been shown on television. IFPI's associate director-

general Gillian Davies says the vote is "a severe blow" that could seriously cut back the video indus-

try if it were adopted as law. France

already operates a legally enforced 12 -month window between theatrical and home video release and this has turned out to

be "a pirate's charter," she says. And she adds: "It creates a

ready-made market for illegal video copies of popular films. Simi-

larly, to delay video release until after a film has been televised is an inducement to home taping. This again will greatly reduce the home

video distributor's market."

IFPI says it will oppose the idea

of a compulsory "window" by lobbying the EEC Commission and

the Governments of EEC member

countries, but it has welcomed a

second decision of the European

Parliament taken during a debate

on the "Television Sans Frontieres"

Green

Paper consultative

document.

The paper suggested that

once a programme had been

broadcast anywhere in the EEC,

cable operators should be able to

screen it at will under a system of

compulsory licensing, but IFPI ar-

gued successfully that this would

destroy the economic balance be-

tween the video and television in-

dustries and would also make it im-

possible for music video producers to co-ordinate the tim-

ing of their marketing campaigns in different countries.

In the end, the proposal was

thrown out.

If you are into rock & roll trivia, check out a great concert coming up in November, at the Royal Albert Hall, here in London. All those

people that you thought were now cleaning cars for a living are reliving the past. Names such as

Rick Nelson, Del Shannon, Bobby Vee, Bo Diddley and Frankie Ford. Gosh can you imagine the scenes in the dressing rooms, everyone fighting over who will wear the gold lama suit, and all those hair pieces

everywhere. Great stuff, I just hope I can get some tickets before Mike Read & Stuart Coleman buy them

all up. Congratulations are in order to

Richard Ogden, he becomes new MD of Polydor records UK. He formerly managed 'The Motors'

and the man with the hardest name in the world to spell, Bram

Tchaikovsky. Congratulations are

also in order to Colin Burrows and his lady whose name I do not know (we do! her name is Mimi- the edi-

tor!), but they got married recently. Colin is the Capital Radio producer for the 'Chris Tarrant' show, and also the Sunday quiz 'You Ain't Heard Nothing Yet'. Not to worry

Colin, you will get a proper show to

produce one day. Check out the current single

from Reggae rockers "Aswad", it's been number one on the reggae chart for weeks, it's called Bubbling, and is really good. Also in the reggae area, Smiley Culture called me to tell me that he has a new record due soon. Poor old Smiley recently got into trouble with the Police after he was found to have a gun without a licence for it. What was that about "Police

Officer no give me producer"

Smiley? See you soon gang

GERMAN INDUSTRY:

STRONG DOMESTIC SALES SURGE by Jim Sampson The German music business is steamrolling through 1985 with unprecedented success abroad and an economic turnaround at home. "The industry is very satisfied," com-

ments EMI managing director and IFPI chairman Friedrich E. Wottawa. "We're expecting an improvement around 8% in domestic DM sales for 1985."

Even more encouraging perhaps is the current share of domestic productions in the German sales charts: 30% of both singles and albums. And many of these top singles artists who record in English (Jennifer Rush, Modern Talking,. Sandra) have also stormed the charts throughout Europe.

Virgin head Udo Lange classifies these productions as "European Dance Music", and Michael Hector, Promotion head of Ariola, adds: "You could almost say it's a return to the disco days, because most of these hits came out of the German discos, Their danceability accounts for one third of their domestic singles sales coming on maxis." And that in turn explains why maxi -singles (up nearly 60% during the first half of '85) together with compact discs (up 130%) are pacirig the strongest domestic disc/tape sales surge in this decade.

"These current hits sound different from British and American productions," asserts Lange. "And that's perhaps the key to their attraction in Europe. It's too early to talk of a trend, but these recent successes abroad are certainly a new start for domestic English language producers. German language material must now be tailored for German tastes, such as Nicki, Maffay or Carpendale."

Lange believes domestic productions with international aspirations have no future if sung in German: Michael Cretu's Samurai originally released here in German, sold 10,000 copies.

When we did it in English, it was a hit in Greece, Italy and Scandinavia, and suddenly it has sold over 50,000 in Germany... in

English!" Most of these Euro-dance singles came

out of the discos and were only picked up by radio after they had entered the charts (an exception being some of the new private stations: Munich's Radio Xanadu put Sandra's

Modern Talking- (Hansa/Ariola) Germany's most successful export product of the year 1985: 3 consecutive no. 1's in the German charts.

4

Sandra- (Virgin) Being an excellent dancer and performer, at 17, Sandra joined the all -female disco band Arabesque that sold over 5 million albums worldwide and had massive single hits in the Far East where the band toured

frequently. The 22 year old German singer started her solo career with the disco single (I'll Never

Be) Maria Magdalena a song that first hit the Greek charts and then became a top

hit in Germany, Italy, Scandinavia, Benelux, Austria and Switzerland. Now in its 13th week, the single keeps on climbing

the European Top 100 Singles. Maria Magdalena was produced and co -composed

by the Rumanian born musician/composer/producer Michael Cretu (see separate section).

'Maria Magdalena' in powerplay rotation almost immediately after release). German discos were also the launching pad for a series of Italian disco singles this year, first from the Indie firm Mikulski, now also from Teldec's new Chic label (Martinelli, Lee Marrow).

Where else do the hits come from? Juke-

boxes have lost their power to help internation-

al products, although Ariola believes they still play a role for domestic singles.

Printed media, including music monthlies such as 'Musik Express, 'Sounds' and 'Musik Scene' are valuable support vehicles but considered slow in reacting to trends. The alternative 'City Magazines' have a better record in this area, and one record exec pointed to the magazine 'Spex' as the top trend barometer: "They're the last real forum for artists who aren't aiming at the top 75."

Of course, the premiere hitmakers in Germany remain state -chartered radio and television. The former provides first exposure and perhaps a chart entry, then the latter can propel a modest entry to gold or platinum. The weekly vidclip countdown 'Formel Eins' is "the most important TV show in Germany for

singles, especially international products," according to CBS artist marketing head Heinz Canibol, who also mentions 'Kangaroo, 'Na Sowas', 'PIT' and 'Extratour' (Mike Leckebisch's successor to the legendary 'Musikladen').

"It is most important that the show fit the artist," observes Ariola's Hector "Leckebusch

Trio- (Mercury/Phonogram) They released their first album in autumn 1981, the front cover of which contained a card on which their private address and

telephone number was printed. During a photo session a photographer presented them with the Casio synthesizer and when

group member Stephan Remmler pushed the first button the single smash Da Da Da was composed. This simple and naive song becomes a hit in a few months and the whole world (apart from the USA) can

sing along. The follow-up Anna-Lassmichrein-

Lassmichraus (Anna Let Me In -Let Me Out)

only confirms the group's status as Germa-

ny's most humorous pop group. The immense breasts of Hamburg's most famous hooker Domenica decorates the cover of Trio's 3rd single Boom Boom (outside Ger-

many aptly entitled Boom Boom). Other hits follow like Herz 1st Trumpf and Turaluraluralu lch Mach Bubu, Was Machst Du (you want us to translate this?) and now in '85 they are back with a new English titled album What's The Password?, full of elementary pop music with its basic tongue in cheek lyrics.

Bad Boys Blue- (Coconut/Ariola) Anglo/American/Jamaican project which had a huge Euro-Crossover success this year with the pop single You're A Woman reaching 24 in the European Top 100 Albums (September 16th) and charting in no less than 9 European countries.

Their new single Pretty Young Girl continues the line of You're A Woman and could be their next Euro-Smash.

Daf- (Dean Records/Ariola) Pioneers in making the German language acceptable for rock. Their 3rd album AIles 1st Gut (Virgin 1981), contained the disco hit Der Musolini and had much success in the UK: minimal music on swinging synthesizer

rhythms. They split up in '82 but are now back on

the Ariola subsidiary Dean Records with the

single Absolute Body Control.

Michael Cretu- (Virgin) Michael Cretu originally hails from the Rumanian capital Bucharest and now resides in Germany .

His latest single Samurai crosses the bridge between electronic music and pop, proving that such a mix can be fruitful and commercial. The single is taken from his recently released second album entitled The Invisible Man that charted in Germany, Switzerland and Austria.

Cretu's music is influenced by such British artists as Elton John, The Alan Parson's Project and Buggies. He says of his own work: "I wanted to make electronic music warmer than it usually is. I'm romantic, slightly sentimental and I wanted to

reduce agression."

or 'Forme! Eins' are not the best for all kinds

of music." Cable broadcasting is just starting in Germany, with about 1.5 million homes connected. About 400,000 can actually receive Sky Channel (subscribing and with cable -ready TV) while around 300,000 are able to see Music Box from London. So the British satellite sta-

tions still do not have a major impact here, and there is little independent research on their audience. CBS Europe is now testing response to ads for its new Billy Joel album on 'Sky Trax'. The German Indie KMP Musicbox gets into

about half as many homes as its British

cousins. All West German states and West Berlin

now have limited cable operations, many with local cable radio stations. But only in Berlin and Munich can these stations reach enough

listeners to begin attracting major advertisers, Munich still has Germany's only private com-

mercial broadcasting. Of the country's roughly 30 private stations, 12 share the three available broadcast frequencies in Munich. And of those 12, only the two

dominant operators of Radio Gong 2000 have

established a somewhat clear reception (Schlager/Pop/Talk) on 96.3 MHZ. Radio C,

transmitting from Italy, also has substantial

listenership in Southern Bavaria.

This 'New Media' explosion is seen with

some scepticism by the record companies.

"No unconditional joy" about the new media

at "old media" heavyweight CBS, where

Heinz Canibol believes "they take a share of

leisure time away from music."

They do not take many records away from

the labels, however, because they are not

offered many free. All German labels offer pri-

vate stations subscription services costing

300-500 dollar per year, although many suburban discos reaching more modest au-

diences get their singles for nothing. Most

privateers have rejected subscription offers, and rely on local label promoters for limited

servicing. But the subject of promotion servic-

ing is an extremely emotional one, the greatest point of friction to date between the

fledgling private stations and the major Ger-

man labels.

Continued on Page 18

Udo Lindenberg- (Polydor) Veteran rocker Udo Lindenberg, who has been on the German rock scene for the last 15 years, is a singer with a difference. He publicly acknowledges that his words

and lyrics are frequently more important than his actual music. Nicknamed 'The In-

ternationalist', through his concern for politics, world hunger and minority groups, he chooses to involve himself with such issues on a personal level. His memorable speech at the 'Live Aid Concert'; an earlier single, 'The Gruene Mauer', whose proceeds all went to Africa; and future plans to perform in another charity concert with Stevie Wonder amongst others, all testify to his deep convictions.

Udo is now experiencing an interna-

tional breakthrough long after recognition in his native Germany. His English rendering of Germans (which reveals his particular sense of humour) has been released in Scandinavia, Benelux and the UK, where it charted. This single appears on his new album, Radio Eriwahn, one whole side of which was recorded at the International Youth Festival in Moscow. He performed two duets with top Soviet Rock Ladies Alla Pugatchova and Shanna Bitschewshaja, both of which appear on the LP

Double- (Metronome) We can only repeat our words stated in issue 36, September 9th: "With their single

The Captain Of Her Heart this Swiss based band have good chances to attack Europe. Their music is a pleasant mix of soft

intelligent pop and easy -listening much in the same vein as Michael Franks and Ben

Sidran (who remembers him?). Eight moo-

dy and jazzy tracks of which Captain,

Woman Of The World, and Rangoon Moon

stand -out".

They are currently riding the German charts and as soon as they enter other European charts we will stop writing about them.

be seen above. After hitting the US Billboard charts 2 weeks

ago, A -Ha now hits the European Airplay Top 50 and jumps in the Top 100 Singles from 8 to

7.

Almost 4 months ago we wrote about the impact we thought the Take On Me single could have on the European airwaves and we were not wrong. After the record appeared to be a typical 'sleeper', bubbling under various European radio charts, it has finally proved to be the perfect candidate for European radio.

A lot of other upward movement in the Airplay Top 50 with Simple Minds moving to 2 (from 5), Grace Jones only in its 2nd week to no. 3, Elton John's Nikita finally picking up the airplay it deserves and moving to 6 (from 32) and Sade's Taboo up to no. 8 (from 11).

The change in musical direction that Talking Heads took on their latest album Little Creatures is now also taking off on their single releases. After their first The Lady Don't Mind, the follow-up Road To Nowhere is this week's highest entry in the Airplay Top 50 and in the Top 100 it moved from 26 to 21 in only its 2nd week. Other entries for Madonna's Gambler, Echo & The Bunnymen in their familiar epic style and the smashing soul duet with it's militant feminist stance, Annie Lennox & Aretha Franklin with what was always one of our faves of the Eurythmics album, Sisters Are Doin' It For Themselves.

As you may have noticed in our new format we print 4 Hot Radio Adds under the Airplay Top 50. These Adds give an indication of what might happen airplay -wise next week. Bubbling straight under the Airplay Top 50 is the wonderful Suzanne Vega, who gave a couple of concerts in Europe that were all very well received. Her folky single Marlene On The Wall

could enter the Airplay Top 50 next week. Aussie band INXS is in the middle of a con-

cert/promo tour around Europe and the airplay on the Rolling Stones influenced This Time is gradually building up and is another contender for an entry next week. Other Hot Radio Adds

for Madness' (Uncle Sam) and Feargal Sharkey with A Good Heart.

If you can't decide on these ones, we have some more tips for your program. The American Whitney Houston, who so far has only made it in Germany and the Benelux, has a beautiful single out entitled Saving All My Love For You (on Arista). Give her a chance, your listeners will like it! The ubiquitous Sting has his 3rd single re-

the Singles route

Night (Riva/Mercury)

leased from his latest solo -album, and while If You Love Somebody is still charted in France, Italy and Spain (and Love Is The Seventh Wave

not yet having any major position) he tries again with the single Fortress Around Your Heart, a track that, of all the tracks on his debut album, reminds one the most of his Police

material.

Paul Hardcastle didn't really invent the technique of scratching on a hiphop beat, but he was definitely the one who has made the most successful attempt so far. The follow-up to the huge smash 19 is entitled Just For Money and this one continues the energetic hiphop of 19 with its spoken commentary words on top of the demanding rhythms.

UNITED KINGDOM

Completely in line with this week's spe-

cial on Germany, Jennifer Rush stays for 3rd consecutive week at no. 1! And Euro-product continues the attack on the English chart with A -Ha this week at no. 2. Colonel Abrams stays at 3 but he should not feel too 'Trapped' because he is best played single on the

UK airwaves this week. It's getting a bit corny, but Madonna

is back in the top 5 again, with the

Geffen song Gambler (from Vision Quest OST). After Axel F, yet another MCA soundtrack theme is on its way to

the top of the English charts; Miami Vice Theme by Jan Hammer moves

this week to 5 (from 10). New in the Top

10 is Elton John ith Nikita (9-19). Highest new entry for the Duran Du-

ran splinter Arcadia, Election Day new at 14, The beautiful new single from Kate Bush, Cloudbusting is 2nd best entry at 26. Other entries for UB40 (35), Siouxsie (Cities In The Dust- 36) and the new Madness- Uncle Sam at 45.

Strong moves for Level 42 (13-21), King (20-37), Echo & The Bunnymen (23-33), ZZ Top (27-39) and Thompson Twins (King For A Day- 29-40).

GERMANY It took some time, but Double have best played single in Germany this week and are shooting up the charts from 16 to 10. Norwegian A -Ha have second best played single but they are

superseding Double in the charts; Take On Me is new in the top 10 (3-13!) and with its high position in the UK market (no. 2), it makes A -Ha the most succesful Scandinavian group after Abba (who once hit the top of the US charts with

Dancing Queen).

Modern Talking remain on top with Cheri and the single keeps on being

played in Germany (3rd best). The strongest mover is Midge Ure's

If I Was, moving to 9 (from 49!). Other moves for Matt Bianco (15-64), Tina

(24- 58), Simple Minds (28-62) and

Klaus Lage Band (Faust Auf Faust; 3151). New entries for Madonna (who else; this time with Dress You Up- new at 20; in the UK Gambler is the definite fave), and Michael Cretu (Samurai; see also separate section in this issue).

AUSTRIA The Austrian channel 0E3 is proud of

its own artists: Falco's Vienna Calling is best played single; the Austrian rapper is followed by Stefanie Werger whose Sommer is second best played single. Other popular singles on the national channel include UB 40, Witney Houston (the beautiful ballad Saving All My Love For You), local artists Wilfried (Masgumje) and STS and Kool & The

Gang.

FRANCE Eros Ramazzotti only enjoyed the status of having a no. 1 for a very short time, as Una Storia lmportante is this week dethroned by Carrere act Century with their Lover Why. Fast movers in this week's French hitparade are nearly all records that go down in the charts of other European countries; Eurythmics (Angel), Tears For Fears (Rule The World) and the Rah Band (Clouds) are doing extremely well in France at the moment. Pathe Marconi act C. Jerome is the local production shooting up the charts, his Et Tu Dance 'Avec Lui is no. 18 this week (from 24).

As for Airplay the new Daniel Balavoine single L'aziza (Barclay) is new in the AM playlists and immediately best played as well. The same single can't be found on FM and this proves that AM, as always, is more in tune with the typical French chansonnier. Popular singles on FM include Madonna, Stevie Wonder and Eurythmics.

BENELUX UB 40's I Got You Babe is the best selling single in the Benelux at the mo-

ment and coming straight after at no. 2 (last week 10) is the theme from the popular tv series Mistral's Daughter by Nana Mouskouri entitled Only Love. Bowie & Jagger fall back to 3 (from 1) and Simple Minds are new in the Top

10 at 4 (from 12). Strong movers in the Benelux charts

and contenders for next's weeks Top 10, are Tina Turner's second Mad Max single, Midge Ure, Sade, The Cure (with the sparkling Close To Me) and Matt Bianco's Yeh Yeh.

SOUTHERN EUROPE Stevie Wonder cracks the Southern hitparades and is highly placed in all

Southern countries. Part -Time Lover has Life Is Live on its heel as this one is still very popular in the Southern market. Other popular records include (in order of importance): Madonna's

Groove, Bowie & Jagger, Hardcastle's 19, Tina's Hero and Sting's If You

Love Somebody. Although Tarzan Boy still hits the

charts, its follow up Woodie Boogy is on its way in Southern Europe as the next smash for Baltimora.

SCANDINAVIA Compiling the charts of Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland into one Scandinavian hitparade, exactly 6 records are charted in all markets. BaI-

timora's Tarzan Boy is no. 1 in Scandinavia followed by Stevie Wonder, Sandra (not yet charted in Finland but about to come), Tina Turner, Madonna, Eurythmics and Bowie & Jagger. Falco's Amadeus is doing welkin all countries apart from Norway and it is 8th best sold single.

Sweden and Denmark are the two

countries where the Hitparades are

most common and apart from the

above mentioned, Depeche Mode, Modern Talking (Cheri), Simple Minds and Baltimora (Woodie Boogy) are charted in these two markets.

ONCE UPON A TIME

Without receiving much airplay, hardrock band Iron Maiden with their double -album Life After Death are the highest new entry this week in the European Top 100 Albums. Following earlier entries of hardrock bands like Foreigner (Agent Provocateur- new entry at 26) and Kiss (sylum- entry at 40), this makes Iron Maiden's album the highest entry a hardrock album has reached in 1985.

The double -album is an impression of their World Slavery Tour and features tracks like Aces High, Two Minutes To Midnight, Number Of The Beast and their latest single Running

Free.

The other entries all fall in the 2nd half of the Top 100 and include Level 42 (World Machine), the new album of Modern Talking (Let's Talk About Love) and the album of the ?underground' band The Cult (Love). Other entries for the commercial compilation of all

the hits by Depeche Mode (singles '81-'85; including a.o. It's Called A Heart, Shake The Disease, Master And Servant, People Like People and older ones like See You and Get The Balance Right, the new album by Jennifer Rush (Movin') and the MCA soundtrack Miami Vice, about which we wrote last week.

For the last 2 years most new bands have been inspired by the halcyon days of the 6T's. Whether it is in the form of revived Byrds' guitars (R.E.M) or a return to American -based r&r (Jason & The Scorchers, John Fogerty, The Blasters) or c&w (Violent Femmes, Rank And File) or even Tex-Mex (Los Lobos, The Blasters), all those bands lean on 6T's pop sen-

sibilities.

Obviously, all those new American bands have not reached high levels of acclaim in Europe yet. Green On Red however, is a new band just signed to a major label (Mercury) that should succeed. Their country -tinged rock approach on their 2nd album No Free Lunch is best exemplified in tracks like Time Ain't Nothing, Honest Man (where the lead vocalist sounds like Tom Verlaine) and the Willy Nelson

cover Time Slips Away. It's Simple, Mind(s) over matter... The new

Simple Minds album Once Upon A Time has arrived and will undoubtedly be next week's highest entry in the Top 100. The melodic feel of Don't You is continued and the emphasis lies more and more on strong melodies and accessible arrangements. Their most glorious moments are to be found on the title track (with Kerr's demanding vocals), in All The Things She Said (in a chrystal clear production of Bob Clearmountain and Jimmy lovine) and / Wish You Were Here. 'Once Upon A Time', their romantic and majestic sound, had cult status, but has now reached the level of belonging to the world's best pop bands.

Beggars Banquet has issued a music sampler of their best bands entitled The State Of Things. The price is very reasonable and the compilation is even better: tracks from The Cult, The Fall, Nico, John cale and The Icicle

Works. It only proves the quality acts Beggars

Banquet possess.

Other strong new releases for Robert Palmer (Riptide), English new funk band Simply Red (Picturebook) and of course the strong album of Suzanne Vega who tours at

the moment in Europe (for review see issue 32).
