INSTRUCTIONAL GOALS

This course is a survey of United States History from early colonization to modern times. Emphasis is placed on the political and social issues that have shaped our democracy. Students should end the year with a solid understanding of how major events in history have impacted their lives. They will be exposed to the information needed to understand and get involved in the current events and issues shaping our country.

Required Materials

To successfully complete this course, you will need:

• Binder

• Dividers for binders – at least three

• pen – everyday

• colored pencils

• loose-leaf paper

POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

General Rules:

1. All students must show respect for their fellow classmates and their teacher(s).

2. ID’s must be visible upon entering class. If the student does not have their ID, a temporary ID must be obtained at the school’s front desk prior to coming to class.

3. No electronic devices are allowed. These items will be confiscated if visible. This includes devices that are not turned on!!!!

4. No food or beverages allowed.

5. All students must be in their seats when the bell rings. If a student is tardy to class, their homework will be accepted as late for less credit. Also, any work missed because of tardiness while not be allowed to be made up.

6. It is the student’s responsibility to makeup any work missed while absent from class due to illness, field trip, or school function. The student must approach the teacher to inquire about what work has been missed!! It is not Mrs. O’Shea’s responsibility to come to you and inform you of what went on during your absence.

7. You will be asked to redo work that is done incorrectly or poorly for less credit.

8. No passes will be given. Do not ask!!! Ever!!!!!

Grading Policies:

Grades will be based on class participation, class assignments, homework assignments, binders, daily warm-ups, current events, projects, quizzes and tests. A point system will be used.

Grading Scale:

A 95-100

B 88-94

C 81-87

D 75-80

F 74 and below

Current Events:

Each Friday, you are required to have a current events article. This article must relate to the United States in some way. The article must be attached to your written opinion about the article. Students will present their articles and ideas to their classmates. This assignment will be modeled by Mrs. O’Shea the first Friday of school.

Daily Warm-ups:

You will begin working upon entering the class on a warm-up activity designed to get them focused for the day. These are activities that will review, practice, or teach U.S. history concepts.

Binders:

Keeping organized is an important element to success in my class. All the information you need to be successful will be within this binder. It will be maintained over the course of each semester. I will grade this several times each quarter to keep you on track. Daily warm-ups, some class assignments and notes will be checked when I grade.

Extra Credit (Maximum of five extra credit assignments for each grading quarter):

A schedule of television shows and a list of movies that relate to our class content will be provided to you on the school website. You may watch these and write them up as extra credit. Each extra credit assignment will be three paragraphs in length and typed. The student will also take a brief quiz. These opportunities are worth up to ten points each. An example will be shown in class.

Constitution Test:

It is a graduation requirement that you pass a Constitution Test. This test will be administered during Semester I.
