I learned that some of my values are dependent on other values. For example, my value, " having a family" is the real reason why I care about other values.? Having a family means everything to me and without this value the others do not mean anything to me. Why? Because I have no more reason to value wealth, achievement and growth. s?Prompt #2:? Can you see a connection between what you desire and your inner sense of purpose?? Explain.????????? I found that I that I want to have financial Security. In every single item I listed, I reference how I want to become successful. Again, this goes back to having financial security for my family and myself. I also realized that I want to spend more time with my loved ones. This is hard to have if I want to have financial Security. According to successful people, one must be able to put 90+ hours a week in order to be successful. In my case, what's more important for me is spending time with my family while is still achieving my goals.?Prompt #4:??Lemming Debrief:? Think about the structures in your life – select two or three and discuss how each of these structures influence your life, the way you view the world, the way you relate to others, and your ability to be effective.????????? Some of the structures that influence my life are beliefs about myself and beliefs about others. First, I came to this country when I was 8 years old. For me, it has been very hard changing my mindset because of so much poverty I saw in my country. For the first 8 years of my life my mind was conditioned to think that it is ok to be poor because poor people are usually happy. This is very similar to the lemming story. In the lemming story, lemmings were taught to just jump off the clip without asking any questions. People in Guatemala have this type of mentality. They don't bother to ask; why am I? living life in poverty? How can I change my life? What other opportunities are there in life? However, my mindset started changing when I came to the United States. I saw the abundance of wealth and opportunities. All one has to do is to continue to keep working.????????? The other structure is beliefs about others. The belief to trust other people is what usually holds me back. I don't usually trust people and this is the reason why it is so hard for me to hold conversations with total strangers. ?You might ask, how do I get around work talking to strangers? Well, I have learned that while I am at work, I am playing a role and I act that role I believe is necessary to play. I know this mind sound like I am not genuine but it's something I am still learning to do. However, this does not mean that I am not able to build trust or relationships. It just takes longer for me to learn to trust a person.?Prompt #5:? Make some connections between the Lemming Dilemma and the HBR article?“Do your commitments match your convictions?”???In particular, comment on “inertia” with respect to the structures in your life.? Elaborate on the positive and negative aspects of inertia with respect to living a values-centered life. One of the main points I took about the lemming Dilemma is that it is not enough to ask, "what it is that I don't want?" If we ask this type of question then we are going to simply continue living the same life. thus, inertia. on the other hand, we need to ask questions that truly get to the bottom of what we want in life. We need to get to know ourselves on what we value, what makes us happy and how we change the world around us.? If we continue to live a life of inertia than nothing ever changes. In addition, we need to ask this questions so that we continually make progress to change. Sull and Houlder (n.d.) explains, " ... managers have a tendency to respond to even the most dramatic changes in their competitive environment by relying on an accelerating activities that worked in the past." ( p. 7). This is referencing back to inertia. In an inertia perspective, managers continue to make the same decisions relying on their previous mentality. However, this does not help with innovation and nothing changes.????????? I think that positive Inertia for me is moving at constant rate of change. I need to continue to set my goals and priorities and continue to achieve them. This is positive inertia for me because I will continue to growth, develop myself and in the process become successful. Negative Inertia would be to let life control my goals and priorities and wait for something to happen. This type of mentality is not good because if one doesn't it change it then one can end up in the wrong place. ?????Prompt #6:? Imagine that your life exists exactly the way that you want it to be, right at this moment –regardless of what you believe is actually possible.? What do you see?? Where are you?? Who are you with?? What do you do with your time?? Be specific.??Also, what underlying personal meaning, values, personal characteristics, desires are represented and/or satisfied in that life?????????? My perfect life would be to be living comfortably in a nice big ranch with horses.? I want to have my own business owning 10 rental properties and at the same time still working for a major corporation as a Marketing Manager or Product Manager. I want to be making $130k a year. My wife and son are with me and we typically enjoy nice long vacations, eating dinner in the outside patio,? and spending time in the pool in the summer. I want to accumulate a net worth of at least 3 millions in houses.? I also want to travel to other countries such as Europe, Thailand, ?and China. I want to be able to give back to my mother and Brother and give to others as they need financial help.????????? I think that the underlying values are financial Security. I want to be able to create a life where I don't have to worry financially and in the process enjoy time with family, feel accomplished that I was able to achieve my goals of obtaining an MBA and getting a good paying job within a? large corporation. In addition, another underlying value is growth and wealth. I want to achieve these so that one day I can pass this wealth to my son. Although it is very important for him to achieve his own success, I want to make sure that he doesn't have to worry about the things I worry. ................
