Go to the following website to complete the tasks:



Click on the “Where is Vietnam?” tab:

Identify and state the significance of the following locations in Vietnamese history:

Click on the “The Decision to Escalate” tab:

Select one of the documents, describe its contents, and explain how it illuminates the American decision to escalate the war in Vietnam.

Click on the “The Anti-War Movement” tab:

Answer the following questions:

1. What arguments do Jane Fonda and John Kerry voice against the Vietnam War?

2. To what extent do the two agree? To what extent do they differ?

3. Do you think their arguments would be effective in persuading large numbers of Americans to oppose the war?

Click on the “My Lai Massacre” tab:

Answer the following questions:

1. Identify the diverse factors that contributed to the My Lai massacre

2. In what ways did the soldiers at My Lai actions violate the laws of war?

3. Describe the cover-up that followed the massacre. Why did the cover-up fail?

4. Who should have been held accountable for events at My Lai?

5. How did newspapers respond to reports of the My Lai Massacre and the subsequent investigation and trial?

Click on the “Negotiated Settlement” tab:

Read one of the documents and determine whether you believe the United States would have been able to achieve a negotiated settlement in Vietnam.

Click on the “Public Opinion & the War” tab:

Drawing on the charts and graphs, construct an explanation for changing American views toward the Vietnam War.

Click on the “Lessons of Vietnam” tab:

Answer the following questions:

1. What strategy did the United States adopt in Vietnam?

2. In what ways did the United States underestimate its adversaries and overestimate its own strengths?

3. Do you think a different strategy would have been more successful?

4. What would victory in Vietnam have required, or was victory not a realistic objective?

Identify one of the songs and discuss its themes, imagery, and significance.

Final task:

Compare and contrast the Vietnam War with our current “War on Terror.” Be sure to comment on the political, social, and economic aspects of both wars.
