For the Bible Tells Me So

One of my earliest memories of Church is the morning my Sunday school teacher taught us a song. It went like this: Jesus loves me, this I know/For the Bible tells me so. These words are both simple and powerful. They have stayed with me all my life. They remind me of the promises contained in Holy Scripture. At certain times in my life when I have been lonely or sick or sad, I have recalled Bible verses that have helped me through. In a few weeks, the children of FUMC will gather for First Kids Camp. One of the most important things that will happen is that they will learn Bible verses that will carry them through the ups and downs of their lives. And like me, like you, they will one day be able to recite their favorites from heart.

This summer, I would like to hear from you about the passages of Scripture that have sustained you; the ones that continually remind you Jesus and His love. I will ask you to share your favorite verse. Six passages will be selected ? the ones receiving the most submittals -- will be our worship texts from July 7th to August 11. Pastor Christy, Pastor Jean, Pastor Jeremy and I will preach on your favorites for each of those Sunday mornings.

So, how do your favorite passage for this series? You can simply click on the church website home page banner or complete a form and drop it in the ballot box located at the Welcome Desk with your favorite verse. If you would like to include the reason your selected verse means so much to you, I would be delighted to hear! We will also have an opportunity to "vote" on a Sunday morning and in the ballot box at the Welcome Desk.

Twenty-five years ago, I wrote a Ph.D. dissertation of the Swiss theologian Karl Barth. He wrote a voluminous number of books; enough to fill a large bookcase. One of my professors liked to quip, "Life is short, but Barth is long." Near the end of his life, Karl Barth was on a lecture tour of seminaries and universities in the United States. A seminary student raised his hand one day to ask an impossible question: "Could you sum up your theology in a sentence for us?" There was snickering across the lecture hall. How on earth could Karl Barth sum up all that he had written in a single sentence? But the old theologian smiled broadly and replied without missing a beat. "I would be glad to sum it all up for you," he said. "Jesus loves me this I know for the Bible tells me so."

This summer we will celebrate that great truth that gets to the heart of our personal faith. We will learn from each other about Jesus and his love. We will explore together what the Good Book has to teach us.

Habitat for Humanity Faith Build

Habitat for Humanity and Thrivent Financial are partnering to make affordable housing a reality for Henderson County through the Faith Build program, a partnership powered by Christian faith and a passion to build stronger families, churches, and communities. As members of FUMC we are called to build community inside and outside the church. A Habitat for Humanity Faith Build is a meaningful and fun way to answer this call! FUMC is a committed partner in this year's Faith Build. Congregation members are called to generously volunteer their time, choosing to help with construction or non-construction activities. Financial support for the project is being provided through a $5,000 Missions grant.

Whatever your interests or skill level, you can make an impact! Some of the ways you can get involved in this Faith Build include volunteering on a build day, providing lunch for on-site workers, creating a welcome basket for the family, participating in the groundbreaking and dedication events, or praying for the build team.

Please join us for the groundbreaking and wall raising on June 8 or for one of the FUMC work days on June 15, June 27, August 6 or August 24.

For more information contact George Abernathy at 828-406-1606 or gwabernathy@.

What if you had it in your power to keep one child from severe malnutrition, malaria, intestinal worms, abuse, homelessness and despair?

In fact, as a member of FUMC you have done this and more for 692 children through your support of ZOE over the past six years. And we now are partnering with another 105 children in Kenya to support their rise out of poverty and hopelessness to productivity and hope. The Upendo "Love" Group was formed in January of this year, and the young people have begun their three-year journey out of abject poverty by attending training, planting crops, starting businesses and returning to school. The report of the group's beginnings is in the mission folder of the FUMC website under ZOE, and you can read it by clicking here.

Some ZOE supporters in FUMC have given $4000 per year as a challenge match for our congregation. We in the congregation provide the remaining $4000 a year for three years until the children graduate as fully sustainable families. To donate, you can write a check to FUMC and put ZOE in the memo line. For more information, go to or contact Carol Watson at 803-530-7120 or carolhw313@

Two preschoolers argue over who gets to be Jesus' best friend.

A 2nd grader wonders, "Why do weapons exist?". A preteen opens up about life at school. Two toddlers recently placed in foster care need someone to hold and comfort them.

A 1st grader runs up and gives you a big hug just like she does every time she sees you. This is life in Children's Ministry. Leaving my position as Director of Children's Ministry is bittersweet to say the least. I will certainly miss the loving hugs, the playful curiosity, and the continual reminder of what it means to have faith like a child. But I won't miss it too much, because I will continue to regularly volunteer in Children' Ministry. I volunteer because I believe the children of FUMC should be our top priority. If we see a need and do nothing about it, we can't expect that someone will fill that need. We must be part of the solution (James 2:14-26).

It's my hope you will take time to pray and consider if Children's Ministry is a place where you can serve weekly or monthly. We need people of all ages, abilities, and talents. And it's not just babysitting and reading bible stories. It's soooo much more! It's building personal relationships while guiding kids in their spiritual development. It's creating a fun, safe environment where kids can be themselves and ask big questions. It's sharing God's infinite love. It's important, holy work and it takes many willing hands and hearts to do it well.

Volunteering with kids may seem like a daunting task to some, but fear not! The amazing Children's Ministry staff will train and equip you to succeed! Please reach out to Angela Bailey (angela@) or Mitch Corn (mitch@) for more information about Children's Ministry. Or contact me if you've ever considered becoming a foster parent (I always have to put in a plug for foster care!).

With love and gratitude,

Lauren Tilden

Dear FUMC Family,

I would like to thank one and all of you for keeping me in your prayers, and for the cards and the gifts of your presence at the rehab facility, during my recent illness. Your love and thoughtfulness was instrumental in my recovery.

It is certainly good to be home and resuming my old life, and I look forward to further participation in FUMC activities.

Sincerely, Gretchen Ryan
