[Pages:4]What are the "best practices" for setting up my personal computer for use with myitlab?

To ensure that you have an optimal experience with myitlab, please review and implement these "best practices" for your home computer. If you run into any problems or have any questions, please call Tech Support for immediate assistance at (800) 677-6337. Their hours and additional ways to contact them are posted here:

1) Before using myitlab, confirm your computer meets ALL the myitlab system requirements.

9 Operating Systems ? Microsoft Windows XP SP2 ? Microsoft Windows Vista ? Microsoft Windows 2000 SP4

Note: myitlab can be run on a Mac with an Intel-based architecture, running under Windows via a program such as Boot Camp or Parallels

9 Browsers ? Internet Explorer 6.0 ? Internet Explorer 7.0

9 Internet Connection ? Broadband connection (cable or DSL) or higher recommended ? Dial-up/56K modem minimum requirement

9 Hardware (Memory, Processor and Sound Card)

Memory (RAM) ? Windows XP/2000: 512MB or higher recommended; 256MB minimum requirement ? Windows Vista: 1GB RAM

Processor ? Windows XP/2000: 1.4Ghz processor ? Windows Vista: 2.0Ghz processor

Sound Card ? Any MCI compliant sound card

*Note: The increase in the requirements for Vista are due to the additional memory and CPU overheads imposed by the operating

system itself.

9 Screen Resolution

? Optimized for use at 1024x768, will scale to fit 800x600

? Will scale to fit 800x600 (except Active Help Desks, which only run at 1024x768)

? DPI setting should be set to 96 DPI (Normal size in Windows XP; Default scale in Windows Vista).

9 Players (if you do not have these components, you will be able to download in the installation wizard) ? Active x Control ? Adobe Flash player 7 or higher ? Adobe Reader

2) In order to install all the necessary players and plugins for myitlab, you need to have administrator rights on your computer.

Administrator rights allow you to install software on a computer. Before running the Installation Wizard to install plug-ins and players on your personal computer, make sure you have full administrator rights on your machine. If you are on a lab computer or a computer at your institution or place of business, you probably do not have full administrator rights, and you will not be able to install players and plug-ins from the Installation Wizard. In this case, you need to contact your lab administrator, network administrator, or the owner of the computer so that person can run the Installation Wizard for you.

How do you know whether you have Administrator Rights? If you are using your own computer or you have installed software on this computer before, you already have Administrator Rights.

If you are using Windows 2000 or Windows XP, you can

check whether you have Administrator Rights:

a. Right-click the Windows Start button.

b. Look for the text Explore All Users (but do not select it). ? If you see this text, you have Administrator Rights. ? If you do not see this text, you do not have Administrator Rights. In this case, please contact your IT Administrator for help. You cannot install without Administrator Rights.

3) ****When working in myitlab, be sure that no other applications are running on your computer. Other programs running in the background can increase launch times and cause the simulations to move more slowly.

4) Before you start taking exams, you MUST complete ALL steps in the myitlab Installation Wizard to install the myitlab simulation player, Adobe Flash, Adobe Reader, and the myitlab simulation files.

? All components must be downloaded before launching an exam! ? *****IMPORTANT: Make sure to complete the final step, Step 4: INSTALL MYITLAB PLAYER SIMULATION FILES, since

this will greatly improve simulation player loading time and optimize your myitlab experience.

To run the installation wizard, visit myitlab/start and follow the on-screen instructions. Be sure to complete each step before moving on to the next. For additional support in running the installation wizard, please refer to the Getting Started with myitlab Guide attached to your student access code kit or online at underneath the Student Documentation heading.

5) If you are using Internet Explorer 7, confirm that your browser settings are set correctly

When running myitlab with Internet Explorer 7, you may have to update your browser security settings to allow you to access myitlab without errors. 7) Confirm that you do not have pop-up windows blocked

Pop-up blockers or anti-adware programs may interfere with installing plug-ins and players and accessing parts of your course. You should configure these programs to allow pop-ups before running the Installation Wizard or trying to use any part of your course.

How to allow pop-ups from specific locations:

With most popular pop-up blockers, you can allow pop-ups from specific locations. This setting is generally found in the Settings, Preferences, or Options portion of your pop-up blocker. For specific instructions, please refer to the online help for your pop-up blocker.

8) Ensure that your firewall is not blocking access to myitlab.

If you are using a firewall such as McAfee or ZoneAlarm on your computer, you may need to change some settings to ensure that myitlab works correctly on your computer. First, note that myitlab communicates using the HTTP protocol via Port 80, so computers that are accessing myitlab must be able to communicate via this port. (Most computers are able to do so, by default).

The full domain name and IP address for myitlab are:

? Name: myitlab. ? Address: 209.202.161.240

Other firewall settings that may be appropriate to consider for your computer to ensure myitlab works properly: ? Allow iexplore.exe access to *. (or myitlab. or the myitlab IP address, depending on your firewall) ? Allow TAIT3.exe access to *. (or myitlab. or the myitlab IP address above, depending on your firewall)

Also note that some firewalls may restrict the type of files downloaded from the Internet. Filters preventing the following types of files from downloading should be removed:

? .cab ? mp3 ? .xml

9) For ALL users, filter your Content Advisor security settings for optimal performance:

Content Advisor

1. Start Internet Explorer. 2. Click Tools. 3. Click Internet Options. 4. On the Content tab, click the Enable button 5. In the Content Advisor dialog box, click the Approved Sites tab. 6. In the "Allow this Web site" field, type and click the Always button. 7. In the "Allow this Web site" field, type and click the Always button. 8. In the Content Advisor dialog box, click Apply.

9. In the Internet Options dialog box, click OK. 10. When the window asking you to Create a Supervisor Password opens, click cancel

Below are instructional screen shots on how to adjust your Content Advisor if you are running Vista:
