MEETING MINUTES

GUEST/PUBLIC COMMENT –

Chantell Garcia – Working on a student awards ceremony for the end of the year, a student nomination form will be sent out in the beginning of March.

SGA is hosting a Dodgeball tournament on February 28th from 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm, to register for a team send the SGA an email or stop by the office to complete a form.

SGA will also be hosting a 3 on 3 basketball tournament on March 12th in the evening from 6:30 to 8:00.

Mary Doucette – Accreditation: The self-study is complete and has been sent to Faculty and Staff. Included is a closing the loop document, please review. Mary has been researching how to make accreditation a positive experience. The accreditors are coming to make sure we are meeting the accreditation standards and have the data to back it up.

Mary also researched four things to make the accreditation process successful; Self-study, demonstrate commitment, schedule the accreditors accordingly, and make them comfortable. The accreditors will be interviewing Faculty, Staff, and Students as well as a peer review and observing professionalism. There will be an exit report.

Jennifer Brown – Mandatory advisement; The summer and fall schedule will be opening soon and mandatory advisement is ready to go. When a new student enrolls an automatic hold will be placed on their account. One the student has met with an academic advisor the hold will be removed from the student’s account.

Approval of minutes – Brian Zeiszler motioned to approve the meeting minutes of December 13, 2019, Stephen Theriault seconded the motion, with the request that the meeting minutes be corrected to state that Faculty web pages have been blocked and an email to Frank Sawyer would need to be sent to have the Faculty pages updated. Motioned passed.

f. Curriculum & Articulation – Action, Written Report: Approve the new College Bound Certificate program to be added to the 20/21 catalog. Inactivation of the BAS-GRC program for the 21/22 catalog. Stephen Theriault motioned to approve; Brian Zeiszler seconded the motion. Motion approved. 1-member voting present.

The deadline for item submissions was December 5th for the 20/21 catalog. Admissions for the 21/22 catalog are now being submitted.

Non-senate Committees

o. Child Care Center Advisory Committee – Written, Verbal Report: QRIS (Nevada Silver State Stars, Quality Rating Improvement System) a 1-5 star level, 1 being the lowest and 5 being the best based on certain criteria. There are only 28, 5-star centers in Nevada out of approximately 550 centers in Nevada. The GBC Child Care center is the only 5 star rated center in Elko County. The rating was achieved in May of 2015 and has been maintained since then. NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children) the accrediting body for the childcare center performed a review in December of 2019, the childcare center has maintained their accreditation rating of 99.6%!

p. Diverse Population – Written Report

q. Revitalization – Verbal Report: The spring end of semester event will be May 8th from 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm. The purpose is to provide an opportunity for faculty, staff, students, and the community to visit the Elko campus and celebrate the upcoming graduates. There will be food trucks, a concert series, and a cap decorating station. If you know of any local musicians that may be interested in performing, please provide Sidnie with their contact information.

t. By-Laws – Action, Written Report: Updates to the Bylaw language. Ethan Hawkley motioned to approve with; Kathy Schwandt seconded the motion with the request that the Bylaws be amended to include the paragraph that starts “The development of actions…”, Faculty members should not be addressed as “Adjunct”, but as “Part-Time”. Motion approved with the requested amendments. 1 voting member abstained.

INFORMATION –

Congratulations to Ethan and Rebecca Hawkley; Daniel Robert Hawkley was born February 12, 2020 at 2:35pm, weighing 7lbs 2oz.

Reminders for everybody: February 27th career fair, February 28th Dodgeball Tournament, March 6th Blood Drive, April 29th Emergency Drill.

The census will be April 1st – 30th. There will be a count station in the library. The census is extremely important to federal funding for the state of Nevada.

PUBLIC COMMENT –

The GBC Film Festival is February 20th and 21st. The 20th will be a viewing of “Parasite” and the 21st will be a viewing of Oscar nominated animated short films. There will be food. The doors open at 5:30 pm and the films start at 6:00 pm.
