The Site: On This Date in North American Indian History The
Address: The Reason: Keeping the record of a
people in cyberspace JUST WHEN it seems to the average person that the
Internet is slipping inexorably into a commercial abyss where every box
of cereal has its own Web site (what, you've never visited
?) you can stumble across a site that restores your faith in
the Net as the last truly democratic medium of expression.
To those who encounter Phil Konstantin in his day job as a member of
the California Highway Patrol, there may be little in his demeanor to
suggest that he is also a guardian of an important part of the American
experience. A member of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, Konstantin has
devoted considerable time and energy to the creation of his Web site, On
This Date in North American Indian History.
November is National American Indian Heritage Month. And while most
of us associate November with Thanksgiving (recalling grade school
lessons about how the Indians gave gifts of maize and other native foods
to help sustain the newly arrived Europeans), the reality of the
relationship between the two peoples has, for the most part, been
anything but harmonious.
Konstantin has spent thousands of hours constructing a site that
details the ensuing clash of cultures that saw his ancestors driven from
their homelands.
A distinctly low-tech enterprise-no stunning graphics here-the site
emphasizes the message rather than the medium. It offers compelling
detail, studiously researched and compiled. You'll find, for instance, a
list of more than 3,000 events that happened to or affected the Indians,
arranged in 52 increments.
Oct. 31, for example, begins with "1755: Today will see the
beginning of a raid by almost 100 Delawares and Shawnees against
settlers in Fulton and Franklin Counties, Pennsylvania..." The site also
explains tribal name meanings and Indian "moon" names, and provides
links to other American Indian sites.
In addition to Konstantin's work as a California Highway Patrol
officer-he is a spokesman and maintains a CHP Web site-he's also worked
at other interesting jobs, according to the site, such as a computer
operator at NASA's mission control and a radio and TV talk show host. He
also is the author of more than 100 newspaper and magazine articles.-Bob
