The term object relations refers to the internal representations of self and others with associated affects, and how these structures then influence relationships with one's self and with others. Because of failures in development, a significant difference between people with personality disorders and those without them is that people with personality disorders do not have whole object relations. That is, their internal representations of themselves and others are split into two partunits. Each part-unit has a very extreme, unrealistic, and one-sided view of the self (the part self-representation) and a very extreme, unrealistic, onesided view of the other person (the part objectrepresentation).
