Preface

The present volume is a result of work done in preparation for the LLP Erasmus Intensive Programme "Migration and Narration" (ERA_IP-10-2009/7/2010) taught jointly by partners from Universit?t Bamberg, Germany, St Mary's University College, Belfast, Great Britain, Szegedi Tudom?nyegyetem, Hungary, Universidad de Huelva, Spain, H?gskolan Dalarna, Falun, Sweden, Uniwersytet Jagielloski, Krak?w, Poland, and Pastwowa Wysza Szkola Zawodowa, Krosno, Poland, the main coordinator of the project. It is designed as a collection of materials for further editions of the programme and for similar courses on the problem of migration in its social and cultural contexts. Nine articles in the volume show how the migrant experience is reflected in literature. They focus on such fundamental issues related to migration as ethnic, national and linguistic identity, cultural and historical memory, cultural adaptation and assimilation, hybridization of selfhood. Three papers deal with the phenomenon of humour as an expression of popular ethnic and national stereotypes formed to define and tame the other. Four contributors look at the impact the globalised migrant world has on language and communication. The closing paper treats the phenomenon of Erasmus mobility as a migrant experience and asks whether it helps to foster the concept of European identity.
