THE DESIREE V. COOPER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPSThe Desiree V. Cooper (DVC) Memorial Scholarship Foundation seeks to honor the life and legacy of Desiree Vonita Cooper by championing the things she was passionate about in her professional career and personal endeavors: providing continual service to her communities and encouraging minorities and women in the advancement of their careers in architecture. The Foundation is pleased to announce the opening of the DVC Scholarships for 2021: The Black Women in Architecture Award, The Harrisburg Memorial Award, The DC Memorial Award, and the new NOMA Award!The Black Women in Architecture AwardLate 2020, a major milestone was achieved, the number of Black women licensed to practice architecture in the United States inched up to 500. This number represents only 0.4% of the total registered architects in the nation. The DVC Memorial Scholarship Foundation seeks to encourage and support more Black women to pursue and achieve licensing in the field of architecture. The award is worth $1,410.00 and will cover the registration fees for all six portions of the Architecture Registration Exam (ARE) for an eligible Black woman who is prepared to sit for the ARE.The Harrisburg Memorial AwardHarrisburg, Pennsylvania is Desiree’s hometown and where her heart was. She invested in its real estate, consistently gave back to its community efforts, and visited family there often. The DVC Memorial Scholarship seeks to honor her family by awarding a prize to a minority resident of Pennsylvania. The award is worth $705.00 and will cover the registration fees for three portions of the ARE. The DC Memorial AwardThe Washington, DC metro area was Desiree’s newest adventure, where she decided to buy a house, to start new roots, and where she honed her craft as an accomplished woman in architecture. The DVC Memorial Scholarship wants to remember her excitement and passion towards her new city by awarding a prize to a minority resident of DC, Maryland or Virginia. The award is worth $705.00 and will cover the registration fees for three portions of the ARE. The NOMA AwardNOMA has been at the forefront of supporting architects from communities of color for nearly 50 years. The DVC Memorial Scholarship seeks to support a larger number of candidates by providing this new award for 2021 members of NOMA. The award is worth $470.00 and will cover the registration fees for two portions of the ARE.Submission:Applications for the 2021 Awards will be released in early December 2020. Submission deadline is 11:59pm January 11, 2021.
