Chapter 1 Introduction

Introduction

I am going to take it upon myself to assume that you have chosen to read this book because you are looking for natural alternative solutions to perhaps either a particular health problem, or maybe even a few health-related issues, and I am happy to say, that you are one step closer to finding the right natural solution for you. Have you ever sat down to relax and watch your favourite TV show in the evening and found yourself bewildered by commercials promoting new drugs on the market that you would swear contain a book of possible side-effects; anywhere from mild to life-threatening? It's almost impossible to believe that any of the benefits in taking these drugs and medications could outweigh the negatives. The truth is, although prescription drugs can be helpful, necessary and even life-saving in some circumstances, far too often we are being prescribed medications for illnesses or ailments that could simply be helped by using natural remedies that are either far less or not harmful to us at all; remedies that seldom create new problems or pose great health risks to us. The information you are about to find in this book is going to provide you with a whirlwind of options for treating some of the most common problems and diseases faced by so many, naturally with little to no side-effects at all.

Chapter 2 Drugs Are Bad

Every year, Americans spend close to $200 Billion dollars on prescription drugs alone; NOT including over-the-counter medication purchases; and that is just within the United States. Can you even begin to imagine what the world-wide numbers accumulate to?

Far too many doctors today have adopted a "pop-a-pill and you will get better" attitude so much so that it has become customary, and the result in overprescribing and misprescribing medications; an astounding 160,000 deaths a year due to adverse reactions from medications and approximately another 1 million hospitalized with prescription drug related injuries; notwithstanding the thousands of people who become dependent and addicted to prescription medications, falling victim to overdose and fatality.

The Big Misconception

There is a misconception amongst over-the-counter drugs that they are safe, have no sideeffects or pose any risks to your health. Each year, 16,000 people in the United States die each year from adverse reactions to over-the-counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, like ibuprofen or aspirin which can cause gastrointestinal bleeding, kidney and cardiovascular related problems.

Children are also largely at risk when it comes to experiencing adverse reactions to prescription and over-the-counter medications. We believe the resilience of their developing bodies can tolerate the effects better than that of an adult, but this is quite frankly not true. In 2007 many over-the-counter cough and cold medications were taken off the market due to the significant amount of adverse reactions from medications in children under 2 years of age, and the FDA announced that almost 200 unapproved prescription medications containing hydrocodone must be withdrawn from the market for children under the age of 6.
