Recovery Helicopter Co-pilot (Apollo 12)
Glenn was commissioned an Ensign in 1966 and received his designation as a Naval Aviator in March 1968. He reported to Helicopter Antisubmarine Squadron Four (HS-4) that September. Glenn was not involved in a flying role for Apollo 11 however he participated in the recovery mission aboard the USS HORNET along with President Nixon and the huge media contingent.
Glenn was the co-pilot of the astronaut Recovery helicopter (#66) for the Apollo 12 recovery mission in November 1969, which was also launched from the USS HORNET. His primary responsibilities were to act as safety observer to ensure clearance from other aircraft, to monitor engine and flight instruments and ensure that a safe altitude was maintained. He was responsible for ensuring that flight checklists were followed for a safe recovery evolution.
