COL J.B. EGAN

Colonel Egan was born on 16 October 1948 in Camden, New Jersey. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in July 1967 and attended Recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, South Carolina. Upon completion, he was sent to the Infantry Training Regiment, Camp Geiger, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina for training as a 0311.

In November 1967, Colonel Egan departed CONUS for the Republic of Vietnam where he served as a Rifleman and a Squad Leader with Golf Company, 2d Battalion, 3d Marines. In August 1968, Colonel Egan was reassigned to Camp H. M. Smith, Hawaii, for duty in the Headquarters and Service Battalion, Operations Section.

Upon reenlistment in August 1969, Colonel Egan was sent to Marine Barracks, Naval Station, Annapolis, Maryland. From this assignment, he was accepted into the 69th Officer Candidate Class.

Graduating as Class Honor man, he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in June 1970. He graduated from the Basic School with honors and was assigned to the 3d Marine Division where he served as a Rifle Platoon Commander and Company Executive Officer of Fox Company, 2d Battalion, 4th Marines.

Upon return to CONUS in February 1972, he was assigned as the Guard Officer and Operations Officer for Marine Barracks, Naval Station, San Diego. In May 1975, he returned again to Quantico to attend amphibious Warfare School and Nuclear Biological and Chemical Weapons Employment School.

In 1976, he returned to the 1st Marine Division where he served from August 1976 to November 1978 with 2d Battalion, 5th Marines as the S-3 Officer, S-4 Officer, and Commanding Officer of Company "G".

From November 1978 to August 1980, Colonel Egan served as the Commanding Officer, Marine Detachment, U88 Long Beach (CGN-9). In August 1980 he was ordered to Headquarters, U.S. Marine Corps, Washington, D.C., where he served in the Manpower Department.

Colonel Egan again saw service with the 1st Marine Division from September 1984 to June 1986, where he was initially assigned as the Executive Officer, 3d Battalion, 5th Marines and later with the Assistant Chief of 8taff, G-l as the Division Career Planning Officer.

Departing the 1st Division in June 1986, he was assigned as the Commanding Officer, Marine Barracks, Naval Submarine Base, Bangor, Washington until July 1989, when he again returned to the Camp Pendleton area. From July 1989 until April 1992 he was assigned to Headquarters and Support Battalion, Marine Corps Base, initially as the Executive Officer, and later as the Commanding Officer. In April 1992 he reported to the I Marine Expeditionary Force and assumed duties as the G-3 Current Operations Officer. During this assignment he participated in Operation Restore Hope, JTF Somalia, as the J-3 Current Operations Officer.

In August 1994, Colonel Egan was transferred to Marine Corps Base, Camp Butler, Japan, where he served initially as the Inspector, Marine Corps Bases, Japan, and later as the Commanding Officer, Headquarters and 8ervice Battalion, MCB Camp Butler, and the Camp Commander of Camp's Foster and Lester. In July 1997, he

returned to I MEF, where he was again assigned as the Current Operations Officer. During this tour he deployed to Kuwait as the I MEF (Fwd) Operations Officer in support of Operation Desert Thunder and participated in numerous exercises. He retired on l July 2000 with 33 years of active service and currently serves on the I

MEF Staff coordinating a Joint Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance program for US Central Command. Although retired, he deployed in support of I MEF for Operation Iraqi Freedom I and II.

Colonel Egan's personal awards include the Legion of Merit with star, Bronze Star with Combat "V", Purple Heart with three Stars, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with two Stars, Navy Commendation Medal with Star, Navy Achievement Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Combat Action Ribbon

with star, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Service Medal with

star, Humanitarian Service Medal, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Bronze Star.

Colonel Egan and his wife, the former Patricia M. Connelly of Bronx, New York, have three children, Kathleen, Kevin and 1st Lt USMCR Brendan Egan.
