CHAPTER 9

PHYSICAL READINESS, WEIGHT CONTROL AND SWIMMING REQUIREMENTS

900. GENERAL

a. The Navy and Marine Corps emphasize optimum physical fitness for purposes of health and performance. Physical readiness and awareness of the need and benefits of continuing personal fitness are essential parts of the NROTC program in preparing students for commissioning and subsequent duty. Accordingly, each must establish an individual program aimed at achieving increasing levels of endurance and general physical fitness.

b. All students are expected to attain increasingly higher levels of physical readiness as they progress through the program. The effort and initiative shown in this regard is a direct measure of aptitude for service as a commissioned officer. Specifically, the degree of performance attained and progress made toward increasingly higher standards of physical fitness bear directly on an individual's laboratory and aptitude grades. Also, individual performance is used to determine the Honor Platoon for each semester.

c. NROTC members are encouraged to participate in college athletics, both varsity and intramural, under the same terms and conditions that govern the participation of other students at the institution.

d. All NROTC midshipmen shall keep their advisor and the AMOI advised of all changes in their physical status as soon as they occur.

901. ADMINISTRATION AND TESTING

a. Physical Fitness Assessment

(1) General. Each NROTC member must pass a Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) twice each academic year. The PFA consists of a Body Composition Assessment (BCA) and a Physical Readiness Test (PRT)/Physical Fitness Test (PFT). All test events in the PRT/PFT shall be completed on the same day. Navy students will take the Navy Physical Readiness Test (PRT) and be guided by OPNAVINST 6110.1 Series. All Marine and Marine Option (including prospective Marine Option) students will take the Physical Fitness Test (PFT) and be guided by the procedures in MCO 6100.3 Series and MCO 6100.01Series.

(2) Events. The events to be performed by category of student are:

(a) Curl-Ups/Crunches. (All students) Time limit is two minutes for males and females. In the correct starting position, participants are on their backs with their shoulder blades touching the deck, knees flexed and both feet flat on the deck. The arms are folded across and remain against the chest or rib cage with no gap between the forearms and the chest or rib cage when raising the upper body. One repetition consists of raising the upper body from the starting position until the elbows or forearms touch the thighs and then returning to the starting position with the shoulder blades touching the deck. No bouncing or arching of the lower back is authorized, and the buttocks will remain in constant contact with the deck throughout the exercise. An assistant may hold the feet or legs below the knees in whatever manner is most comfortable for the participant. Kneeling or sitting on the feet is permitted.

(b) Push-Ups. (Navy, optional for Marines) Assume the front leaning position with hands approximately shoulder width apart. The arms, back, buttocks and legs must be straight from head to heels and must remain so throughout the test. Shoes should be worn. Begin push-up by bending the elbow and lowering the entire body until the top of the upper arms, shoulders and lower back are aligned and parallel to the deck. Return to the starting position by extending the elbows until the arms are straight. Repeat correctly as many times as possible in two minutes. You may stop and rest in the up position but you cannot rest your body on the deck or the test is ended.

(c) Pull-Ups. (Marines only) Mount the bar with the palms facing to the front or to the rear. One repetition consists of raising the body with the arms until the chin is above the pull-up bar and lowering the body until the arms are fully extended again. The pull-up bar will be executed without any whipping, kicking, or kipping motion. The legs can be held straight or in a bent position but may not be raised above the waist. Any leg movement used to generate vertical movement in the execution of the pull-up is not permitted. The body may be kept from swinging by an assistant holding an extended arm 6-8 inches across the front of the knees of the Marine executing the pull-up. A certain amount of inherent body movement will occur as the pull-up is executed; however, the intent is to avoid a pendulum-like motion, which deters from the ability to execute a vertical dead-hang pull-up.

(d) Run. (All students) Marines and Marine Option, male and female, run 3.0 statute miles. All other students, male and female, run 1.5 statute miles. The object of this event is to complete the measured course as rapidly as possible. Walking is permitted as needed.

(3) Scoring The PFA. Overall PFA performance is the lowest category-level performance attained for any exercise event. Members who are medically waived will be scored pass/fail for the portions of the test taken. PFT scoring for Marines and Marine Option Midshipmen will be in accordance with the appropriate Marine Corps Order.
