More Than U.L.T.T’s: Peripheral Neuropathic Syndromes in Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Patients: Upper QuadrantJack Stagge, PT, OCS, FAAOMPT International Manual Therapy SeminarsCOURSE DESCRIPTION:This 2-day course will present concepts of differential diagnosis and treatment of patients with upper quadrant pain and loss of function pioneered by Bob Elvey P. T., GDMT.?? Participants will learn to integrate the six sensitive and specific evaluation techniques into their standard evaluations and specific treatment protocols will be demonstrated and practiced. Often misdiagnosed maladies of the upper quadrant including shoulder impingements, “chronic tendonitis”, adhesive capsulitis, failed whiplash syndromes etc. will be discussed and well documented neurogenic causation will be presented. Real patient examinations, videos, case presentation, and lab practical’s will allow for application into the participant’s daily practice.Course ObjectivesAt the conclusion of the course, participants should be able to:Develop a better understanding of the current evidence and research into neuropathic pain syndromes.Gain an understanding of the complexity and far reaching consequences peripheral nerve irritability can have on musculoskeletal tissues and function.Demonstrate the ability to rule in and rule out neuropathic pain as the causation of patient’s pain, pattern losses, and functional disability.Identify standard orthopedic maladies of the lower quarter that can have their origins in neurogenic inflammation.Demonstrate the skills and knowledge base to integrate both the evaluation skills and the treatment protocols into their normal protocols.Successfully apply manual techniques in specific positions and devise specific home programs to enhance the progression of their patients.Identify measurable outcomes of treatment of peripheral nerve sensitization that reflect the value of these interventions when considering documentation for compensation based upon value- based care.ScheduleDay 18:00 - Introduction - Patient profiles8:15- Orthodiagnosis Types - Orthopedic Evaluation8:30 - Compression vs. P.N.S. and Evaluation Algorithm9:00 - Pathophysiology - Causation of PNS 9:45 - Subjective Evaluation10:00 - Break10:15 - Objective Evaluation: DUCK, Posture and Active Testing 10:45 - Demo and Lab on Active Testing12:00 - Lunch2:00 - Passive Testing – Demo, Lab and Elvey Video on Passive Testing4:00 - Break4:15 - Neuro palpation demo and lab6:00 – End Day 1Day 28:00 - Review of DUCK 8:15 - Tender Points/Specific Signs of Local Dysfunction8:30- Demo and Lab Trigger Point or Tender Point Palpation/Specific Signs of Local Dysfunction9:45 - Putting it altogether10:15 - Break10:30 - Ortho and Sports Med Patient Presentation11:00 – Treatment and treatment demo12:00 - Lunch1:00 - Treatment Lab1:45 - Patient Self Treatment - Home Programs demo and lab3:15 - Break3:30 - Treatment Sequencing3:45 - Further Consideration and Research into efficacy4:00 - Patient Specificity, Review etc.4:45 - Post Test5:00 - End FORMAT: This is a 15-hour course with hands on experience, equivalent to 15 CEUs. Therapeutic Neuroscience EducationKory Zimney, PT, DPT, CSMT, TPS, CAFS, ACCIPInternational Spine and Pain InstituteCourse Description: This course is designed to update attendees on the latest evidence and clinical application of Therapeutic Neuroscience Education (TNE) for patients in pain. Current best evidence has shown that neuroscience educational strategies utilizing neurobiology and neurophysiology are able to reduce pain, increase function, reduce fear and catastrophization, improve movement and change cognitions and brain activation during pain experiences. Therapeutic neuroscience education changes patient beliefs regarding their pain, thus reducing the threat of pain. This class will discuss the evolution of TNE, why neuroscience education is needed in physical therapy and, more importantly, the clinical application and implementation of TNE for patients with acute, sub-acute and chronic pain. Special features include various metaphors, images, examples and case studies explaining neuroscience to patients in pain. In addition, the class will cover clinical issues such as compliance, pacing exercise and activity, incorporation of TNE with traditional movement-based therapy, billing and insurance reimbursement concerns and delivering TNE in busy, time-constrained clinical environments.Course Objectives:Discuss the latest evidence for therapeutic neuroscience educationDemonstrate the clinical ability to apply therapeutic neuroscience education to clinical practice with the use of at least one metaphor shared in class.List at least half of the output systems discussed in class and their response in a chronic pain patientList potential strategies to implement therapeutic neuroscience into clinic practice regarding time, staff, billing and traditional therapeutic treatmentsDesign a treatment plan for a chronic pain patient based on output system dysfunctions with correct pain neurophysiological reasoning behind the treatment with information provided in the courseFORMAT: This is a 15-hour course, equivalent to 15 CEUs.INSTRUCTOR BIO:Kory is a physical therapist with 25 years of experience and a dedication to changing how people in pain are treated. “I teach because I have had the opportunity to study and research more about pain, and I want to share that with others. I want to help them understand pain more so they can use that to offer better care for patients.”Current Roles: Associate Professor, University of South Dakota and Senior faculty, ISPI.CoursesTherapeutic Neuroscience EducationToo Hot to HandleA Study of Neurodynamic: The Body’s Living AlarmResearchThe efficacy of pain neuroscience education on musculoskeletal pain: A systemic review of the literatureThe clinical application of teaching people about painSDPTA SPRING CONFERENCE REGISTRATIONMarch 21-22, 2020Register online at HYPERLINK " registration form and checks payable to:SDPTA, PO Box 91146, Sioux Falls, SD 57109-91146Please fill out form completely!Name:________________________________________________________________________ PT_____ PTA_____ Student_____ OT_____ OTA______ Other______ Address:______________________________________________________________________ City:_________________________________________________________________________ State/Zip:______________________________________________________________________ Phone:________________________________________________________________________ APTA Membership #:____________________________________________________________ EMAIL:_______________________________________________________________________PNUQ:?
