University of Nevada, Reno Foundation Annual Report to the NSHE Board of Regents December 2, 2011
Meeting the Mission
Incorporated in 1981 the University of Nevada, Reno Foundation was established to raise and manage funds that support the academic and administrative programs of the University of Nevada, Reno, while respecting the philanthropic intentions of its thousands of donors. In 2011 the Foundation celebrated its 30th year.
The University of Nevada, Reno continues its upward trend of attracting a record number of students to campus. The University welcomed 18,004 undergraduate and graduate students to campus this fall, reflecting a 2 percent increase over the fall 2010

enrollment of 17,679 students. There was also a 4 percent increase in first-time freshmen,
with 2,880 freshmen starting this year compared to 2,764 last fall. The University also
matriculated 165 Presidential Scholars and 12 new National Merit Scholars, bringing the total of National Merit Scholars on campus to 46, the
largest number ever enrolled at Nevada. Recently, the U.S. News and World Report issued its annual "best colleges" rankings, and for the 2011
"best national universities," the University elevated its ranking as a "first-tier school."
In 2011, the University welcomed the opening of the William N. Pennington Health Sciences Building. In addition, the Foundation continued its role in fundraising for the expansion of the University's world-renowned Earthquake Engineering Laboratory. Thanks to a grant from the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation, the School of Journalism began renovation of its building to become a state-of-the-art, multi-media center for the University's journalism students. Finally, construction on a new Living Learning Center is well underway to enhance student housing and life on campus.
Fiduciary Responsibility
The Foundation takes its fiduciary responsibility quite seriously. The Board retained the services of Grant Thornton to perform an independent audit of the Foundation, which is included in the Regents' materials. The Foundation continues to be a good steward of its funds and is pleased that the auditors provided an unqualified opinion of the financial statements and have not offered a management letter.
