TEACHING VOCABULARY

Students who will be using the In Sync course are provided a list of “new” words that they will encounter in their Student Books. The word lists for each Student Book are found on this website. Before teaching the vocabulary in In Sync, . . .

• Download, print, and distribute the word list to your students. Remind students to keep the list either in their notebooks or paste them in the front or back of their Student Books. Tell them that they will refer to the list for the duration of their English class.

• Before starting each unit, tell students to go over the list of words for that unit and identify words are unfamiliar to them. Encourage them to try and learn the meanings of those words before they work on that unit.

Below are some techniques to use when teaching the vocabulary lessons in In Sync:

• Have students look at the vocabulary box for the day’s lesson.

• Have them listen to the words on audio. The audio provides opportunity for students to listen and repeat each word or phrase. It’s important for students to listen first without repeating.

• Try to elicit the meanings of new words, instead of providing them. Doing so will motivate and give students a sense of pride, especially those who made the effort to learn the meanings before class.

• If applicable, bring real objects to show to the class. Real objects and photos are particularly useful when teaching the words for such things as common classroom objects, colors, and clock times.

• Use pictures and flashcards if the new words are not shown in the Student Books. If there are pictures in the Student Books, use them.

• Get students in the habit of using dictionaries. Be sure all students know how to use a dictionary. If not, spend a session showing them how to use one and how to find words in a dictionary.

It is OK to use the students’ first language once in a while to translate very difficult words, especially those that cannot be illustrated or shown in pictures.

Teach meaning first. Make sure students have had a chance to say the target words out loud by listening and repeating after the audio if provided.

Don’t try to teach too much vocabulary at one time.

If students get bored or uninterested, try to do a competition or a game. Teenagers tend to enjoy competition.

Encourage students to practice the new words. In Sync offers ample vocabulary activities in the student CD-ROMs, Language Builders, and Motivators.

As students progress and mature in their learning habits, teach them vocabulary-acquisition skills such as:

• How to examine the parts of a word, for example, the meanings of base and root words, prefixes, and suffixes.

• Using dictionaries and thesauruses, how to use these references and the kinds of information about a word that students can learn using context clues.

Finally, instill in students that the best and fastest way to widen one’s vocabulary is to read, read, and read a lot.
