Speech TitleSpecific Purpose: To persuade my audience that the NFL needs to make big changes to benefit player health.Central Idea: NFL football is too dangerous for the players. By removing tackling from the game, the injury count can go down without ruining the integrity of the game, and the NFL can continue to entertain fans.IntroductionI would like to show you the real problem with the NFL. Everyone hates the Eagles.Safety is an ongoing problem in the National Football League. We need a solution that will make the game safer for the players, while keeping the game fun and exciting. Long passes are fun and exciting. Short rushes are boring. Also, long passes are safer, and short rushes are violent.Removing tackling would accomplish this goal.Eliminating this aspect of the game will make for a safer and more exciting game.(Transition: Let’s take a look at some of the specifics of NFL injuries)BodyInjuries are a known problem for several reasons in the NFL.ProFootballLogic, a group dedicated to football research and statistics, analyzed the injury statistics over the course of the 2015 NFL season. Through their study of official NFL injury reports, they recorded that 688 different players suffered an injury that prohibited play for at least one week, out of 1794 total players. This equals about 38% of players in the NFL. To put it in perspective, out of all the students in the class, if we played football in the NFL, *this much* of the room would be hurt at some point. More specifically, concussions are also becoming more common in the NFL.New York Daily News Sports reports that concussions were up 58% from 2013 to 2014.High rates of concussions can lead to Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), a brain disorder that heavily affects day to day life.NFL stars have suffered from CTE. Several, including NFL legend Junior Seau have even committed suicide.(With that being said, it is surprising that very few measures have been taken to reduce injury risk.)Although some minor rule changes have been made, the NFL needs to make stronger advances towards a safer game for players. My proposed solution is to eliminate the tackling aspect of the game, and replace it with a flag-football like system of play.Removing tackling will eliminate several opportunities for injury. Most injuries occur during collisions such as tackles and hits during games and practicesFootball will still remain physical.Blocking would still be an integral part of the game.Contact is not banned, only full tackles.Fans would still enjoy the game, and the integrity of the game will not be damaged. The same basic strategies of running the football would apply with blocking and finding holes.A greater importance will be placed on speed in the game.Fans tend to prefer big breakaway passing plays over rough running plays.(Let’s look at the league with the new rule change.)The safety of the league will be much improved, while retaining the best parts of the game.Player’s careers will be elongated. With less wear and tear, players can remain healthy and in the league longer.Fan-favorites will have less of a chance of missing games, and benefit from improved health.CTE will be minimized because of a smaller amount of hits given and taken.Boring running plays will be minimized, and long passing plays will become more frequent.Long passing plays are the ones that make it on the highlight reel, and attract more viewers.Nothing really comes from short running plays, except for potential for injury.(With everything being said. How can we make a difference?)ConclusionThe NFL makes its money from the fans of the game.If the fans voice their opinion, they can make a difference in the league. The only thing in the way of rule changes being put into action is the fear of a negative reaction from fans.We need to realize that in order to continue to watch and enjoy football, player safety is a must.Without greater safety, there will be nobody left to play football. Only we can change this.BibliographyNFL. "DeAngelo Williams Blasts Through for a Goal Line TD! | Steelers vs. Bengals | NFL." YouTube. YouTube, 13 Dec. 2015.
